exploded by now!โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll have to send twenty pounds back with you guys when you go.โ€ Tiffany said, grinning.

Then an idea hit me. I wonderโ€ฆ

"Hey Tiffany," I said, "You'll have to come by for a visit someday. Maybe help us set up a grow room?"

โ€œThat would rock!โ€ She said, exhaling a long stream of smoke. โ€œI so need to get out of this mountain. Iโ€™m lucky if I get to see the sun once a month!โ€

                โ€œWouldnโ€™t you miss your Uncle?โ€ I asked.

โ€œAh, heโ€™ll be okay.โ€ she said with a wave. โ€œBesides, he travels all of the timeโ€ฆ Iโ€™d probably only see him a little less than I do now.โ€

โ€œShow me how to run the hydroponics, and Iโ€™ll tend your babies.โ€ Gaia said. โ€œMy skin color isnโ€™t just a pigment, itโ€™s a vocation. I do wonderfully with plants!โ€

โ€œFae weed is legendary.โ€ Evelyn said. โ€œGaia will probably help your yield and your THC level!โ€

โ€œI wonder if I can make a cannabis beer?โ€ Trevor mused.

โ€œItโ€™s not hard.โ€ Tiffany said with a shrug.

โ€œI like her.โ€ Trevor said, pointing.

                The rest of us laughed.

                                                                                                *                *                *

The next morning brought yet another ridiculous mealโ€ฆ that time it was quail eggs and caviar on brioche toastโ€ฆ and there was a lot of joking around the mess hall about โ€˜living like the one percentโ€™ in between morning calisthenics and  the shooting range. I sat with my friends at Jexoโ€™s table again, sitting to his right.

โ€œI take it your stay here has been comfortable.โ€ Jexo said, spooning more caviar onto his already loaded toast.

โ€œItโ€™s been lovely.โ€ I assured him. โ€œYour niece has gone above and beyond to fulfill our every need.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s excellent at everything she does.โ€ he said.

I looked over at Tiffany, and she was beaming.

โ€œI know.โ€ I said. โ€œThatโ€™s why Iโ€™d like for her to come back to Ohio with us.โ€

Everyone near us stopped eating, and Tiffanyโ€™s face shifted from pride to shock in an instant.

Jexo looked at me, his face unreadable. โ€œYou want her to join your team?โ€ he asked, voice trembling somewhat.

I have a feeling I thought, that if the big guy is this close to showing emotion, I may have bitten off more than I could chew here.

I had come up with the idea while Tiffany and I were exploring the day before. She was smart, capable, and had skills that many of us lacked. She also fit in well with the small crew we had with us, and I didnโ€™t doubt for a moment that sheโ€™d jibe just as well with the whole.

Besides, her being around just felt right.

โ€œIโ€™m a new Sorceress,โ€ I said, โ€œand Iโ€™m still coming into my power. Iโ€™m facing an unknown, powerful enemy, and I need to surround myself with the best. Sargent Collins is the best. Sheโ€™s also become my friend.โ€

Jexo looked straight ahead. โ€œI have heard stories about the court of the Sorceress, about the legendary figures who came to be known for what they had done on behalf.โ€ He turned to face me again, a tear in his eye. โ€œYou are blessing my family with an unimaginable honor.โ€

Woah. I looked at Tiffany, and she mouthed โ€œthank youโ€.

                                                                                                *                *                *

Gauntlets of Criscoula the Incredibly Tall I read from the side of a wooden box. โ€œThese sound interesting.โ€ I said.

Tiffany typed the item number into her tablet and took a look. โ€œGauntlets of Criscoulaโ€ฆ โ€œ she said, โ€œโ€ฆ Okay, here. Hmmmm.โ€

                โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked.

โ€œSeems that they give the wearer a ten percent greater chance of hiding without being found.โ€ she replied. โ€œKinda boring, actually.โ€

โ€œAnd how tall was Criscoula?โ€ I asked, next, though I suspected what the answer would be.

โ€œSays here he was just over five feet.โ€ Tiffany read next.

โ€œTypical.โ€ I walked along the aisle and studied everything on the shelf that was eye-level for me. Letโ€™s find something good.

We had come to one of the category four warehouses to look over Jexoโ€™s collection of mystical artifacts. Thus far I had found objects that would let you jump three spaces in any line without penalty, grow a particular variety of tomato, or add six inches to your apparent, but not actual, height. I had not only not found anything good against rampaging hellephants or mysterious lakes, I had yet to find anything useful.

                "Gee,โ€ I continued, โ€œthis is beyond imagination!โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Tiffany said, doubt in her voice.

โ€œYeah.โ€ I replied, grinning. โ€œI never imagined that someoneโ€™s stash of mystical objects could be so boring and useless.โ€

Tiffany shrugged. โ€œMost mystical objects are incredibly specific, and most were created to meet a particular need at a particular time. The only reason they appear useless to us is because we donโ€™t have that need.โ€

โ€œLike the โ€˜ring of Binghamโ€™, which lets you look down womenโ€™s shirts without detection?โ€

                โ€œIf youโ€™re lonely and horny enough...โ€

                โ€œPoint taken.โ€

I walked a little farther, not finding anything I even wanted to take out of the box and look at. Jexo would probably wet his pants over Vincentโ€™s collection! I thought.

โ€œThe most powerful stuff is on the top two rows, like I told you yesterday.โ€ Tiffany reminded me. โ€œItems on the lower shelves are less dangerous, and thus less guarded.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s up there?โ€ I asked, looking up at the crates obscured behind the orange Fae force field.

โ€œLetโ€™s seeโ€ฆ โ€œ Tiffany said, scrolling. โ€œAh! Okayโ€ฆ thereโ€™s the soul sword, it pulls your soul out of your body if it so much as nicks you, so every wound is instantly fatal.โ€

                โ€œUgh!โ€ I said, wincing.

โ€œAnd then thereโ€™s the Portal of Elradu,โ€ she continued, โ€œopens a gate to unknown realms.โ€

                โ€œThat sounds less scary.โ€ I said.

                โ€œDepends on the realm.โ€ Tiffany scrolled farther. โ€œEveโ€™s Medallionโ€ฆ hmm, thatโ€™s strange.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I walked closer to her.

โ€œIt says that the item description is for level
