βFine.β I said.
I meant it, too. While I had never been an exercise maven, I had tried to stay active. Since coming into my power as the Sorceress, however, my strength and stamina had increased exponentially, so a run that would have winded me in the past hardly had an effect anymore.
I had found Tiffany after my difficulty with Raina, looking for some way to deal with all of my nervous energy. She had been prepping to go on a run, so I decided to join her. We were a couple of miles away from the entrance to the mansionβs driveway before we started to talk.
My running companion dropped back until she was running by my side. βI love getting out hereβ¦ in the clear air.β she said, smiling. βIt really clears my head!β
My own head, unfortunately, was just as cloudy as ever. βMaybe I should run to Argentina.β I said. βIβm not getting the same clearing effect.β
βWhatβs number one on your hit parade of neuroses?β Tiffany asked.
βI canβt even decide on whatβs number one, thatβs the hell of it!β I said, jogging a little faster. βI mean, I try to findβ¦ non eviscerating ways of dealing with douche-bags, and I still get crap from Raina for it. I didnβt give her crap for nuking those commandos, did I? No. But cause one allergic reaction that almost kills one bully, and suddenly Iβm out of control!β
βDid she say that you were out of control?β Tiffany asked, jogging faster to keep up.
βNo, but she was thinking it, I could tell.β I said quickly. βAnd if thatβs not bad enoughβ¦ β
I proceeded to tell her about Angelique, our past lives together, and the constant undercurrent of romance that characterized our entire pasts together. As I voiced my stress, my pace increased until I felt a hand on my arm.
βAnnabelle, please...β Tiffany said, out of breath, βstop for a minute.β
I stopped, only then realizing how fast I had been going. βSorry. Stress reaction.β
I handed her a water bottle and watched as she gulped water in between gulping breaths.
I wasnβt even winded.
βThatβs okay.β she said. βI neededβ¦ a work out.β She swallowed more water.
βSo you see,β I continued, βitβs not enough for me to be the Sorceress, or to have some unknown, powerful foe after me. I have to live on the set of Transylvania 90210!β
βWell, I can tell you that youβve got it all wrong.β Tiffany said confidently.
βOh, really?β I said with a grin. βAre you the Oracle without telling us?β
βPlease,β she said, taking another sip, βYou donβt have to be the Oracle to see whatβs up with you.β
βAnd whatβs that?β This ought to be good!
βYou only think that youβre stressing about what other people are thinking of you.β she said. βThe truth is that youβre not sure what to think about yourself.β
βReally.β
βYes. I mean, has Raina said that youβre out of control out loud?β
βWell, no, butβ¦ β
βAnd has Angelique been bugging you about your pasts?β
βNot directly, butβ¦ β
βAnd where is the only place that these thoughts come from?β
βFrom my head, but I stillβ¦ β
βThen who has the problem?β
Tiffany jogged away before I could answer.
* * *
βSo, is Raina still mad about earlier?β I asked.
βNah.β Jack replied. βSheβs off doing another Stag meeting. Katsu just split to join it.β
I took another hit, trying to relax for the first time today. βI wasnβt trying to be all manic. Iβm just under a lot of stress!β
βYou donβt have to tell me twice!β Jack said, holding his hands up with his own joint clenched between his lips. βKatsu says all the time how she wouldnβt want your job.β
βReally?β I said. βThe five thousand year old Witch thinks I have it rough? Damn.β I exhaled as I took it in.
βSheβs ancient, but relatively unknown.β he said, exhaling as well. βSheβs flown under the radar for five millennia. Youβre already famous around the world, and you havenβt had your powers for a year yet.β
βTrue.β I said, nodding.
βAlso, her stakes have usually been lower." he continued. "I hate to go all Spider-Man on you, but with great powerβ¦ "
βYadda yadda yadda.β I finished, waving my hand. βI know, great responsibility and shit. I get it.β I took another hit. βYou know, I always figured that magickal types would be jealous of my powerβ¦ the power of the Sorceress.β
βSome are, and our βsecret admirerβ is probably one of them.β Jack said. βBut not all of them. Imagine, being happy with what you have.β He grinned.
βWhat are you, some sort of communist?β I asked sarcastically, grinning as well.
At that point, a completely naked Katsu breezed into the room and started rooting around in the dresser by the bed.
βHi, honey." Jack said to his busy girlfriend.
βHello.β she replied, sounding annoyed beyond words.
βWhatβs up?β he asked, smiling at me.
βGod-damn prudes!β Katsu spat, spinning around. βI donβt have any parts that they donβt,β she continued, pointing at her body, βbut now Iβm being disruptive and have to put on clothes?β
βThe nerve.β I deadpanned, grinning back at Jack.
βExactly! Angelique is coming back tonight and weβre supposed to have our new security plan in place before that happens, and Iβm wasting time looking for clothes!β Katsu started searching the piles of clothes scattered near the bed. Without comment, she made her selection and put it on.
βThere!β she said, standing in front of us. βI hope theyβre happy!β
I didn't know what to say about her⦠unique clothing choices but didn't get the chance to say anything to her. She stormed out of the room before I could and I looked at Jack. "Do you think they'll be happy?" I asked.
βI donβt know.β he replied, smiling.
