of my eyes.

โ€œGreetings, ya bastards!โ€ she said with a wide grin, her canines looking fresh and sharp.

We all cheered, and there were hugs all around.

                                                                                                *                *                *

I was hanging out in the library with Raina later, her pouring through Seamusโ€™ collection of rare magickal books while I enjoyed more of Gaiaโ€™s Fae weed.

โ€œDamn!โ€ Raina said, turning the page in a hand-written magickal spell-bookโ€ฆ also known as a grimoireโ€ฆ and shaking her head. โ€œThis guy really had a thing about researching legends of the Sorceress.โ€

โ€œWhat does he say?" I asked, exhaling a thick stream of smoke.

โ€œWell, he got a lot right.โ€ she began. โ€œFor example, not a hereditary position, nobody knows who will be called until the year before they come of age, discerning who is to be the Sorceress is an unknown skillโ€ฆ โ€œ

โ€œWhich Vincent canโ€™t help us with, either.โ€ I cut in. โ€œPetronia, Angeliqueโ€™s first Sorceress, came to her in a vision and pointed them in the right direction. It still took them months to find me.โ€

โ€œSee?โ€ Raina turned another page. โ€œShitโ€™s hard.โ€ She read on. โ€œNow here is some interesting stuff.โ€ she said, pointing at the page. โ€œIt says here that the โ€˜Court of the Sorceressโ€™ always includes Faeโ€ฆ that your magick is closely related to Fae magick.โ€

โ€œYou should know a thing or two about Fae magick.โ€ I said.

โ€œActually, Iโ€™m still pretty clueless.โ€ she replied. โ€œTheyโ€™ve built up magickal spell shortcuts over centuries. โ€˜Say word โ€˜Xโ€™ while focusing your will through the Fae crystal produces โ€˜Yโ€™ resultโ€™, and so on. Most Fae donโ€™t learn the inner workings until theyโ€™re much older.โ€

โ€œDoes it say anything else about this โ€˜Court of the Sorceressโ€™?โ€ I asked, leaning in.

โ€œNot very much hereโ€ฆ โ€œ she replied, turning a few pages. โ€œIt says that the Court has Fae, other Witches, and a Warlord, who directs the legion of the Sorceress.โ€

โ€œLegion?โ€ I said, eyes wide. โ€œPast Sorceresses have had legions? Where did this guy hear that?!?โ€

โ€œSee, thereโ€™s this book.โ€ Raina said, turning a few pages back. โ€œIโ€™ve seen it referenced by a few different peopleโ€ฆ here it is!โ€ she said triumphantly. โ€œItโ€™s called โ€˜In the Court of the Crimson Cauldronโ€™, and itโ€™s by โ€˜Geoffrey of Manchesterโ€™. Ridiculously difficult to get, some fear that itโ€™s lostโ€ฆ โ€œ

โ€œOh, itโ€™s not lost.โ€ Tiffany said, walking into the room. She walked over and sat in the last unoccupied chair by the fire.

                โ€œHey there.โ€ I replied. โ€œHowโ€™s Jazzy doing?โ€

โ€œAh, sheโ€™s off on a hunt with Seamus and Vincent.โ€ Tiffany said, pulling out her own joint. โ€œIntel just came in on a pedophilia ring that has a video location in a nearby residence. Newborn vampires are very hungry, so they decided to go clear it out.โ€

โ€œI know what Vincent does to pedophiles.โ€ I said with a slight shudder. โ€œSheโ€™s going to learn from the best.โ€

โ€œSo whatโ€™s this about that book not being lost?โ€ Raina asked, still focused.

โ€œMy Uncle has a copy.โ€ she replied, lighting up. She took a deep hit and then let it out. โ€œHe used to read to me from itโ€ฆ or, I should say, from type-written sheets copied directly from a hand-written copy of an original copy thatโ€™s currently being held in the most secure location in the world, my Uncleโ€™s private vaultโ€ฆ when I was a little girl.โ€

                โ€œSee, this is kind of a strange part.โ€ I said. โ€œI was, like, someoneโ€™s childhood bedtime stories!โ€

โ€œHe got the copy from his Father, and was raised the same way.โ€ Tiffany continued. โ€œItโ€™s why he let Trevor Hawkinsโ€ฆ someone who heโ€™s told me he wants to torture on many occasionsโ€ฆ into his compound. Itโ€™s why heโ€™s showing such devotion to you.  Itโ€™s why heโ€™s not charging the three thousand dollars a day that heโ€™d normally charge for someone with my trainingโ€™s services.โ€

โ€œThree thousand?โ€ I said, surprised. โ€œHow much of that goes to you, and how much to the house?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s always two to one with my Uncle: two thirds to the operative, one third to my Uncle.โ€ Tiffany said. โ€œThatโ€™s not just me, itโ€™s everyone who goes on missions for hire.โ€

โ€œWowโ€ฆ so youโ€™re sacrificing some serious bank to be here.โ€ I said, eyebrows raised.

โ€œItโ€™s an honor to be, if not in the Court of the Sorceress, then Court adjacent.โ€ she replied.

โ€œOh, you are in my court, whatever that is right now!โ€ I said firmly. โ€œEveryone who lives in the mansion or on the grounds is a part of my inner circle, and I depend on every one of you.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ she said, her voice genuinely touched. โ€œIt is, indeed, an honor.โ€

โ€œHave you checked your bank account lately?โ€ Raina asked, her own eyebrows raised.

โ€œNo.โ€ Tiffany said. โ€œI havenโ€™t had to spend any money since I came with you guys, so I havenโ€™t been worried about my balance. Why?โ€

Raina grinned. โ€œCheck it. Right now.โ€

Tiffany looked confused but pulled out her smartphone anyway. "Where's the damn app? Oh, here it is!" she muttered, and started pushing buttons once the app opened. A moment went by before her eyes went wide. She almost dropped her phone. "What the serious fuck?"

โ€œVincent and Angelique are wealthy.โ€ I said, smiling at her reaction to her bank balance. โ€œLike, stupidly wealthy. Like, governments-would-ask-for-loans-if-they-knew wealthy.โ€

โ€œAngeliqueโ€™s been a vampire for sixteen hundred years.โ€ Raina added. โ€œNow, if thereโ€™s something that typifies the economic models that have evolved over the past one thousand six hundred years, itโ€™s that wealth begets wealth. The more money you have, the easier it is to get more.โ€

โ€œVincentโ€™s never given me a total on how much their holdings are worth,โ€ I continued, โ€œbut they have enough squirreled away around the world thatโ€ฆ letโ€™s just say those news stories about the first trillion-airs? Theyโ€™re late to the party.โ€

โ€œWell, there goes my need to ever work another day in my life!โ€ Tiffany said, putting her phone away.

                โ€œSo,
