Chapter 3
The next morning, I wait in the front of her house, across her street. After a few minutes, Ricky and Janet come out and walk towards Ricky’s car. Ricky looks over at me but it doesn’t matter; nothing matters only Janet but she doesn’t look at me. I ignore Ricky and try to make Janet feel my gaze. Janet looks…sad and hopeless. I guess it didn’t go well with Ricky. I start waling across the street but Ricky and Janet are already speeding away. I stay standing there in the middle of the street, looking at the direction where the car left like how Janet looked, sad and hopeless but also threaten, threaten by Ricky.

When I get to school, I get there too late to talk to Janet but I still look for. I find her in her first period in math, the teacher’s a friend of mine and lets Janet come outside, but when I looked over at Janet, she’s staring at me with these lost eyes with little hope in them. “No.” She says in a hallow voice. I just look at her for a second, shrug and stroll over to pick her up over my shoulders. Everyone in the class whistles and claps except for the teacher, she looks worried. “Put me down!” She says in that empty voice again. “I’ll have her back before the periods over!” I yell behind my back as I head out the door. ‘Man, she’s heavy’ I think. ‘And strong’ I add after she pounds her fists on my back. I walk across the hall but I’m suddenly obstructed by something firm and hard. I look up and see the long eyelashes of Janet’s brother, Ricky. “What are you doing with my sister?” He almost spits at me. “I need to talk to her” I say in my strongest voice that I have. Ricky’s not impressed though, “Put down my sister.” He says slowly with effort not to scream it out loud. I comply with a second to waste. I back away a little from him. “Janet come here.” He says it like he knows she’ll do what he says, and he’s right. Janet follows his commands silently. At that moment I remember what this is all for, dealing with this handsome giant, living with joy these past two days and getting ready to be knocked out of feet and get punched in the face again, for Janet.
This adrenaline suddenly shots through my whole body and I step forward and I tell Ricky, “I said that I need to talk to this beautiful young lady thank you!” I grab Janet’s arm softly and I steer her the other way we were going before.
I stop when I figure out that Ricky won’t be able to find us. I face toward Janet, expectant, I look into her eyes and I tell her, “I love you.” She keeps staring at me and laughs cruelly. ‘Does she hate me that much now?’ I think. “How can you love me? You just met me yesterday. YOU DON’T LOVE ME YOU JUST LUST ME!” She screams. “Have you been brainwashed by your brother? I don’t lust you, I love you! I wouldn’t care if you more fat or skinnier.” I stop, noticing that I just insulted her but I keep going, “Yesterday when I told Roger, I mean Ricky that I want to marry you? Yeah, that wasn’t a lie. I just said the first thing that popped out of my head, and Roger is the name that I want first boy to have. Is that lust or love? You tell me!” She just stares at me and says,” It’s neither; it’s creepy, romantic, sick, and beautiful all at the same time.” She yells. Then she turns and leaves me standing there with little hope. I didn’t know that, that was the last time that I was going to see her till a long time.
