Jamie was at her locker when her friend Nina stopped beside her. Nina was mixed with mexican, Filapino, and white. She dressed mostly like a mexican but with a white girl style to it. She had on black boots with dark grey straight leg jeans, a fitted tank top with a black off the shoulder top. Jamie envied her best friend for a lot of things, but the main thing she envied was her best friends boyfriend, he loved Nina and would do anything for her and thats what Jamie wanted but didn't have."Hey guess what?" Nina said practically jumping for joy.
"What's up Nina". Jamie said while shuting her locker. "I have a date with chris tonight and your coming with us!". "Look Nina I know your trying to be nice by taking me with you on your date but Im not going to be a third wheel" Jamie said walking away. "Nobody said you were going to be a third wheel Jamie"."Then what is it Nina?"Jamie said stopping in the middle of the hall. "It's a blind date, and chris's friend james is going so you two can meet".
"Nina I don't know about this, don't you remember last time". "Yeah but he was an ass so that one doesn't count" Nina said trying to convence Jamie that the blind date wasn't a bad idea. "Yeah well he's dating Cassie Johnson, he went from me a 8 in a scale of one to 10 to Cassie a 10!". "Jamie right now im trying so hard to see from Cassie's point of view but i can't get my head that far up my ass!, so according to me she is a 0 and your a 10".
"Nina your are so mean" Jamie said while laughing and walking with Nina to first period". "Well I just call them like I see them", "so are you going to the movies with us and james or not". "I guess I could go but I swear if he is ugly or is an ass or even does something stupied im going to leave him staring up his ass" Jamie said with her finger in Nina's face.
"Ok girl chill I got this, but if you wanna keep that finger you better get it out of my face". "Whatever" Jamie said as her and Nina walked in first period.
By the end of the day Jamie took her seat in her classroom and plopped her backpack on the ground. She unzipped her backpack and grabbed Her Calculas book and folder and put them on her desk. With a sigh I rested my had on the hard desk until I heard the bell ring a few seconds later. I heard the teachers click clack of her high heels before she entered the classroom.
"Mornin' Class," Mrs. Beckman said as she pushed the door open and strode over to her desk.
A few hushed conversation stopped as she pulled out her detention slips and placed them on the edge of her desk, an unsaid warning to behave.
"Open your books to page one hundred and ten," she said and turned on her computer.
Jamie opened her book and watched as the teacher began to write their homework on the whiteboard. Jamie pulled out my planner and wrote the assignment down so she wouldn't forget to do it later.
"Let's begin with the lesson," she said and put a detention slip on one of the student's desk who was whispering to his neighbor.
"Remember Children, the number one rule in my classroom, absolutely no talking," she barked and glared at the scared highschoolers faces.
"Looks like she fell out the ugly tree and hit every branch that could find her ugly face on the way down!" Nina said while stairing at the teacher. "Your crazy Nina I swear I don't know how you come up with this stuff". "It just comes to me" Nina said smileing.
when the bell rang I ran out of the classroom glad to be finished with school for the day. I slowly made my way through the crowded hallways and made it to my locker.
I opened my locker and put my books away. I slammed the locker shut and headed to the student parking lot. Stepping into my black jeep I fumbled around for my keys in my pocket and was rewarded with the dull pain of the key digging into my leg. I started the car and drove down the street on my way to the dance studio to practice.
Dance Studio
Monday 4:30pm
Jamie usually thought sweating was a sign of weakness. But today she flaunted her shiny forehead like a
badge of honor. It proved how hard she had just danced and
would remind every girl in the class that she was the best.
Jamie lived for mondays at 4:30 PM. She craved the
clean, lemony smell of the studioโs wood floors and felt reborn the second she inhaled the clean, crisp air that hummed from the ceiling vents. She loved being surrounded by mirrors and pretending that she was a professional dancer in a music video.
โThis is the final combination of the day, so make it
count.โ Sondra, the no-nonsense instructor, pinched the waist of her low-rise Capezio pants and folded them over
twice, revealing her perfectly sculpted six-pack. โYou donโt get abs like these watching the WB.โ She slapped her stomach. โDo you, ladies?โ
The room was silent as fourteen girls caught their breath.
โDO YOU?โ she asked again.
Jamie saluted Sondra and shouted back, โNo, sir!โ โWhat was that?โ Sondra looked around the room. Jamie immediately regretted talking back to her teacher until she heard Cassie Johnson let out a snort. Then a few other girls snickered too.
Jamie focused on the ground, trying to look sorry, but it didnโt work. Sondra aimed her piercing green cat eyes in Jamieโs direction and stared for what felt like nine lives. Jamie could feel her insides starting to shake from all the nervous laughter she was trying to suppress and willed her teacher to look away before she exploded. โJamie,โ Sondra finally said.
Jamie widened her brown eyes, hoping to look innocent, and ran
her hands over the top of her head, where her glossy black hair had been slicked back into a high ponytail. โYes?โ
โPlease come to the front of the class.โ Her stern yet steady tone made Jamie even more nervous.
Jamie took her time slowly weaving her way through rows of the dancers.
The girls stood completely still, watching Jamieโs every move in the studio mirror, wondering what was going to happen next.
When Jamie finally arrived, Sondra smiled and sighed. โYou are like poetry in motion.โ She put her lean, muscular
arm around Jamieโs shoulders and turned to face the class. โGirls, I want all eyes on Jamie for this last combination.
Sheโs going to lead. Not only does she have a dancerโs attitude โSondra paused and
grinned, appreciating her own clevernessโโbut she is the only one who seems to fully get this routine.โ Sondra began
clapping, and everyone felt obliged to join her. Jamie pulled the red elastic band out of her hair and
retied her ponytail as tight as she could to show the girls that she was up for the challenge. The hours she had spent
practicing at home were about to pay off. โAh-five, ah-six, ah-five, six, se-vaan, eight,โ Jamie called the eight count and led for the entire length of the Black Eyed Peasโ song โLetโs Get It Started,โ which was blaring from the stereo. For the next three minutes and thirty-five seconds Jamie understood what it felt like have a roomful of girls copying her every move.
When the song ended, Jamie quickly turned to Sondra and asked, โCan we do that again?โ. The exhausted girls let out a collective moan. โWeโre out of time.โ Cassie pointed to the clock on the back wall. โYeah,โ another girl panted. โIt is getting late,โ Sondra said to Jamie with a sympathetic grin. โWeโll pick it back up next week.โ Jamie opened the studio doors and walked to her jeep and drove home.
