But I added that the interviewer was a very nice person and I am sure you will be selected. We then waived bye and parted our ways.

I looked at my watch it was 7:30 pm. Instead of going home I went directly to office. I thought I should directly go there as office would be almost empty by this time and I would have to face less embarrassment. Mr. Roy would be hyper seeing my face and would almost have heart attack when he comes to know I am quitting. I was smiling thinking about how his expression would be. I called Shewta and enquired was she still in office? Fortunately she was and I gave her the news of my selection and asked her to wait till I reach office. She said okay and come quick.

I reached office it was around 8:00 pm. I saw Shewta she smiled and I gestured her where is boss? She pointed me to his cabin. I took a deep breath and entered his cabin. To my surprise MD was smiling looking at me as soon as I entered his cabin. “Come Rohit. So how was your interview?”

I was bestowed by his remarks. “Sir how come you know I had gone for an interview?” I said looking at him.

“Do you think I am a fool??? And this firm is running successfully on its own for so many years… Boy I know everything. You mobile is switched off since yesterday and Mr. Roy was getting insane. He kept me complaining about your behavior. When you didn’t come for office even today, I understood you have gone for an interview and must have been selected. Otherwise you know very well about the consequences of bunking office for two consecutive days without any communication.” He said chuckling.

“Sorry Sir, but I was left with no option.” I said seeking apology.

“Anyways… Congratulations.” He said and shook hands with me.

“Thank you Sir.” I said and saw Mr. Roy entering his cabin.

He looked at me but didn’t say anything rather he was waiting patiently to hear something really nasty from our Boss. But unfortunately Boss didn’t say anything of that sort.

“Roy ji…the boy is leaving forever hope you are happy now?” He said turning towards him.Mr. Roy’s face was like a rotten tomato after hearing this sentence from our MD. Now I was enjoying every moment of this

“So when are you leaving Rohit?” MD said looking at me.

“They want me to join by next Monday. Sir I am very sorry I won’t be able to serve the notice period of 30 days as per appointment terms. If you want I can waive my salary for this month. Hope you understand how important this job is for me. I have huge family responsibilities. I have a debt to pay. I need money and they are offering me double the salary that I get here plus other perks and incentives.” I said and took a pause to grab some breath to continue further. All this while Mr. Roy was looking at my face curiously not sure what was going in his head.

“Sir I know if you let me go it won’t affect you much. But If I lose this opportunity I will be ruined. This is my last hope. Please Sir if you want I can come on weekends and work for you for free till my replacement is found and trained.” I almost beg him on knees to let me go.

Thank God!!! My pleading finally worked and he agreed; he said “no need for that, you will get your salary for the days you have worked and also all the documents you required. Mr. Roy will take care of the things as now and would find a replacement against you. In the meantime if very necessary he will let you know if you need to come on weekends to get pending task done. He picked up the intercom and asked Shewta to come in.

I was standing there feeling a lot relaxed by his assurance. The things turned so smooth which was unexpected. I looked up and thank God. Shewta enters the cabin and Boss instructed her to provide me with all the documents that are required by me. I was asked to type a resignation letter with a photocopy of the same. I signed and gave the original to him and the other copy was signed and sealed with office stamp.

Within an hour everything was complete. I thank our Boss whole heartedly and Shewta as well. I then looked at Mr. Roy who shook hands with me with a fake smile and congratulated me. I knew he was very upset from within as things didn’t turn the way he have planned. He wanted me to be rebuked and expelled from this office. But unfortunate for him, I was leaving happily from this place forever. I thank everyone again and left office.

I was very very happy. Once I reached home first thing I did was to call my Mom and gave her the news. She was happy to know and felt much relaxed. Moms always understand what their children feel even they may be miles apart. She knew very well how stressful my life has been for the past few months. My new job confirmation gave her solace. I kept on looking at my offer letter and reading each and every line carefully. I could not believe I was a part of big corporate world now. It gave me immense pleasure. A person who has travelled in crowded bus his entire life when gets a chance to drive his own luxury car, the feeling is awesome and it can’t be expressed in words and right now I was feeling the same.

I enjoyed my moment of success to the fullest and then later I called Nisha and gave her the news. She was really happy for me and said “see I told you God never does bad to good people.” While still talking to her I went near the lord Krishna idol and thanked him for saving my life. The next morning around 8:00 am I got a call from her. I told her that our miserable days are over as now I have a new job in a MNC. She was very excited as I gave her all the details about how my interview was and what happened thereafter when I reached my old office to submit my resignation and Mr. Roy’s reaction. We after a long time were talking so freely. I wished she was there with me in these moments. I further enquired when you are coming back its more than a month and you had said you will back in couple of weeks. She said she is coming back next week. I got irritated again with her excuses but I didn’t want to spoil my mood so I left her on own as when she wants to come back.

This was the first time she had stayed so long without me. I recalled those days when I used to visit my families in Silchar for a week and she used to get insane and kept me calling continuously to come back soon. Just because of her only I visited my place only once a year. My heart kept me saying that priorities are changing from her side. But I overlooked my conscience voice.

Sep 2009, my first day in new office:

I was standing outside the magnificent building and counting the floors in that building. It had 16 floors. Mine office was in 8th and 9th floor. I called Nisha before entering the building and told her how I was feeling. For the past three years I had worked in two private organizations. But this time it was it was totally a new experience I had become a corporate employee now. I enter the reception area and then was sent to 9th floor for completing all the formalities which took couple of hours. Thereafter the HR manager introduced me to our floor Manager his name was Sailesh. He took me inside a glass cubile for formal introduction and to give brief about the working environment here. Mine was a 12-9 pm shift and was more than happy to know that weekends are off here. Ohhh that’s awesome I thought back of mind both Saturday and Sunday…WOW!!! I would now have ample time for Sakshi who has been complaining for the past months that I didn’t have any time for her.

The first day experience in office was good; I was surprise to see Ankit on the same floor. As soon he saw he came and hugged me and said, “Finally we are together… Good to see you Dost”. I had nothing much to do on my first day in office so just had a formal introduction with everyone on the floor. It was around 4:00 pm I called Sanjeev and told him lets party tonight called Kaushik if he can come. I said I will reach his place with a large bottle of Whiskey and some snacks and some non-veg items to eat by 5 pm. In the meantime I called Kaushik and asked him to come directly to Sanjeev place. As decided we three gathered at his place.

I poured whiskey in three glasses and said raising the glass for toast, “Hey Kaushik and Sanjeev today is really a happy day for me and I wanted to share this happiness with my two dearest buddies.”
