The Hamartia

A tear dripped from my eye as an elderly man, perched at the side of me, nudged me cautiously.

“Are you alright my dear boy?”Asked the elderly man, with a soft tone to his voice, as if he was actually upset over the fact I was crying.

“I am, I think? Well I was but everything just gets hard, I know I’m young, but it’s hard man, it’s like all these voices, telling me all the time that I shouldn’t be here, making me doubt why I’m actually here. If I deserve to be here. If I want to be here.

“Don’t you be upset lad, you’re only young, but nobody can tell you what to do. You live for yourself and nobody else.Your own person. You don’t get put on this planet for a reason, you do not have a reason, you have to make a reason, help people, advise people even then you start to have a reason to be here. You are playing your part in the world.”

“Thank you, really thank you. I think I know what I have to do now” I closed the conversation, stood up from the bench where I’d been for many hours.

I walked the whole way around the lonely park, at least 3 times, making sure that what I am going to do I wouldnt regret in the process. I walked a few yards past the bench I had  been sat before, walked back and sat back down. I lit up a cigarette and started to think how I could to tell people, what would I say. The many questions going through my head at once started to hurt, started to make me even more upset, I didn’t want to hurt anyone, I don’t want to cause grief or anxieties.  Do I apologize? Do I tell them why? How much do I go into detail? Do I tell them where? I don’t care how I do it but I had to end it, there was nothing left for me anymore. I was lost, felt like I had half of my heart ripped straight out of my chester.

The elderly man was stood at the opposite end of the lake, he had a funny look to him, he was smirking, then the smirk turned into a laughter as a young boy, only around 8 years of age walked up to me with an envelope.

“Who’s this from kid?” I asked in confusion.

“It’s from Señor Diablo” The kid shouted as he ran off into the over-grown bushes behind the bench.

The man across the lake moved his arms in a way which you would when opening a book. He wanted me to read it. Is he Señor Diablo?

The envelope was neatly stuck down with the words “Open” wrote on the front.  I was so scared to open it, I didn’t even know what to expect.

"Dear Jamie Hull,

If I have the timings right, you should be reading this 3 days after your 18th birthday.

I know exactly what you did last week. I know exactly how, why and where you did it. You are a vile boy.

I bet you wish you could change what happened that day.

If you aren’t as selfish had I thought you were, and do care about him, and wish you never did it, then walk round to me over the other side of the lake.

Señor Diablo"

It’s not that I forgot what I did, but I did try to put it behind me, but how could somebody know? Nobody was around, I hadn’t even told anyone. Looking over the lake, the old man was still stood there, still with the horrible smirk on his face, it made you realize you had got yourself into some kind of shit.

But then looking, I noticed something I had never noticed before and I don’t think one else had noticed due to nobody around the lake noticing him, nobody talking to him. People stood at the side of him, acting as if he’s not even there.

“Who is this man?” I kept asking my self. But I knew there was only one way I was going to find out. I had to go talk to him. He wants me to which scared me. Knowing that he expects me to come over makes my anxiety levels hit the roof. Knowing that he knows exactly what he’s going to say to me, but I haven’t got a clue.

I sat up and started to walk over, feeling doubtful in my head, should I go? Should I just turn around? He kept following me with his eyes, he didn’t look away from me, not once. At first I thought he was a lovely old man, but now I think I’ve changed my mind.

“So you want to make a difference kid?” The man whispered into my ear.

“How do you know what I did, tell me please?”

“I know everything, and everyone” he replied.

“Okay so who are you? That kid called you Señor Diablo. Spanish right?”

“Yes he did, but I have many names. People call me Señor Diablo, some call me God and some call me The King of Time. But my name is Mr Hamartia, catchy I know”

He seemed so excited and happy whilst he spoke, he was so strange.

“Down to business kid, I have an important question. A question that will change your life. Bring back lives. Are you interested?”

“If you mean Rosie then yes, please, I’ll do anything!” I burst into tears remembering once again what I had done.

“Of course I mean Rosie. You and her will be happy. Trust me! You will get a second chance, not a third, not a forth. Just one more chance to change what you did. Do you accept all you have to say is yes”

“YES, YES! I ACCEPT, YES!”
