From his viewpoint, Adrian Freemont could see his entire neighborhood, a small suburb nestled in the middle of Strafford, Vermont. He could see his house, a large, tan brick building that was built in the 1800s. It was a two story place with a large patio and shingles the color of blood. Sometimes Adrian would unlatch the window from his second floor bedroom and climb on to the roof, the perfect place to sit and gaze at the stars at night.
The house had its own miniature garden, full with blooming peonies and geraniums. A small fountain stood in the center, a stone cupid shooting water from its bow into the swirling blue liquid. Adrian loved the house and its sheer beauty.
Closing his eyes, Adrian let the wind whip his light brown hair behind him, feeling natureโs breath on his skin. He crouched and said a quick prayer. He was about to do something he has never done before, something his mother wouldnโt ever let him do. He was going to bungee jump.
He opened his eyes, and thought, once again, about his strict mother. She was a short woman with dark brown hair. Her eyes were like emeralds, green and shining. She was a gorgeous lady, but she was too tough on her kids.
Adrian has two sisters. The oldest, Melaine, turned twenty two in November and moved out of their parentsโ house. She now lives in Connecticut with her fiancรฉ, Jeremy Strutter. His other sister, Christine, still lives at home. Sheโs taking online classes at Abilene Christian University. Sheโs currently a freshman.
Adrian is going to be a junior at The Sharon Academy in two months. The school was a decent one, and he liked it better than any other school he ever attended. Adrianโs family moved a lot, twelve places since he was born. His mother said that they were going to stay in Vermont, but thatโs what she said every year. Adrian found it hard to trust her.
The operator was standing nearby, chewing on his bottom lip. He was a short, heavy man with brown eyes and a buzz cut. Adrian glanced at him. He nodded, as if to say โGo ahead! Youโll be fine.โ
Adrian took a deep breath, and silently started the countdown. 10. 9. 8. He couldnโt believe he was actually about to do it. 7. 6. 5. Mother would be pissed if she found out, but no oneโs going to tell her, right? 4. 3. 2. This is a chance of a lifetime, an either now or never moment. 1. 0.
He jumped.
