I was always fascinated with the supernatural: witches with black cats and black nails, vampires shrouded in the thick fog of the night, wild and terrifying werewolves, translucent ghosts with mysterious deaths. I was captivated by all that meant mysticism and mythology. But that was all it was. I never thought they were real. I wished they were but I knew they werenโt. I donโt know were my certainty came from, but it couldnโt be shaken.
I gained the nick nameโ The Ice Ladyโ for being dauntless when I heard the urban myths about ghosts and vampires. My friends made up a habit. Every single time we had a crazy bonfire party in some abandoned factory we had a horror story competition. Everyone told a story. The winner was the one that managed to scare me. Or when they thought they did. I usually made some grimace when I thought a story was unbelievably pathetic. They took that for fright. You canโt fear something you donโt believe in. And I didnโt believe in supernatural.
I am Mia, Mia Carver. I am sure.

- Hurry, Mia, my mom called.
- Ok, I said irritated.
It was the summer holiday. Family tradition said we had to spend two weeks together to strengthen our bonds. This year we were going to France, to a resort in the Alps. I was going to smell soap and perfume, I was going to see old women with mud masks on their faces and pools with fat old men sitting on both sides. I was THRILLED.
- Canโt I stay to aunts Grace this time? I tried for the thousand time. We havenโt seen her for so long.
- Mia Alicia Carver, get in the car this second.
I had lost. My mom wasnโt changing her mind. My father and my brother Dylan were smart enough not to enrage her.
After a long day in which we traveled by plane, train, boat and car we finally got to the five star mountain resort โTwilightโ. The owners had named it that way because:โ Once youโll come into our resort youโll step in another world.โ It was different alright. It was the most awful place Iโve ever seen. It was crammed with people wearing hundreds of different odors. There were professional masseurs and all that a beauty obsessed person would want. Did I mention that I barely look in the mirror once a day? All the fuzz about beauty products driveโs me nuts.

I spent most of my time in my room. After a couple of days I was too bored to keep staying cooped up in there. So I decided to go out and explore the surroundings. I kept away from the smelly massage rooms and steamy saunas. I was about to go back to my room when I saw a door taking to the basement. It was a small, ugly painted door. It didnโt fit in with the modern resort. I opened it. It was dark and cold inside. I looked for a switch but I didnโt find any. I took my cell phone and used the light as a guide. The room was full of boxes. They were all covered with white dusty sheets.
I suddenly saw a shadow move. I froze. There was someone else in the room. I moved slowly and I noticed another move out of the corner of the eye.
- Whose there? I shouted.
My voice reverberated in the dark room. I could feel a pair of eyes on me. It made me nervous. My heart started racing and my feet got soft. I was scared. No, I was terrified. My instinct told me I had to get out of there. I rushed for the door. It made a shrieking noise and slammed shut before I could reach it. I felt cold sweat on my forehead. Something was wrong. I sensed that someone was behind me. I slowly turned around. I saw someone at the other end of the room.
- Hello, I said.
- Hello, the other person said. It gave me chills. The voice was the same as mine.
I donโt know if it was momentary madness or my stupid curiosity what made me move closer. Indeed there was someone there. It was a girl. She was still a bit too far away. So I couldnโt see her face.
- Iโm Mia, I said. Whatโs your name?
- Mia, she answered using my voice again. Maybe she liked to mimic voices I told myself.
- So we even have the same name, I said trying to smile.
She took a step ahead and my smile vanished. She wore a white dress, high cheeks, big brown eyes and the crooked smile I had when I mocked someone. She looked just like me.
- Who are you? I asked terrified.
- I am you. I am Mia Carver.
- No youโre not, I said alarmed. I am Mia.
- Are you sure? she asked mocking me.
I turned around and tried to run. I tripped and fell dropping my cell phone in the process. I saw it move in the air. Then I realized she was holding it. She went to the door, opened it and went out. The door closed behind her.
I stood up and run toward it. I looked for the handle but I couldnโt find it. All I could feel were lines and lines of breaks. I couldnโt find the door. I t wasnโt there anymore. I was looked in. There was no light inside. I could feel despair running through my veins. I fell on the floor and kept hitting the place where the door used to be. Somewhere inside I hoped it will appear again.

I must have been there for days, or only a few hours. I had no way of knowing. The door materialised again. Someone opened the door. I charged towards it and tried to open it but it shut back again.
- Let me out, I shouted.
- One must always be inside, my own voice replied.
Then the door vanished again.

Who I am? I amโฆI am Mia. I think. Iโm not sure anymore.
