Mona stared up at the discoloured ceiling above the double bed. It use to be white but was now a pale yellow. She inhaled a cigarette and watched watching as the cancerous smoke fill the room. Dark thoughts clouded her judgement as paranoia seeped through her conscience. Her husband had gone to see his daughter. Mona had no problem with this, in fact Laura was a sweet kid. Although she knew that her husband loved her, she was still eagerly waiting for him to say those magic words. She longed to hear him tell her that he loves her. They had been married almost a full year and yet they still never argued with eachother. Despite their ever lasting honeymoon, she still felt vunerable and feared that Adam would once again break her heart...as he had done all those years ago. Mona wiped away a tear from her unblemished cheek. She felt alone and nobody could hear her cries.

Mona pulled herself together and stood in front of the full length mirror. It was a wonder that Adam hadn't turned away in disgust. Mona stared in horror at her growing, heavily preganant bump. She knew that the baby would arrive in less than two weeks but couldn't turn from her feelings of disgust at what had become of her once flawless figure. Size 10 jeans no longer fitted over her legs and her veins had invaded her body, covering her with blue lines. To add to her misery, stretchmarks had ruined her body as well. Mona swollowed her pride and picked up the phone to call Adam. Sitting silently on her bed, she waited patiently for the phone to ring. "The number you are calling is switched off. Please ring back later or send a text" the voicemail reported. Mona stared at the phone and hung up. Her heart had suddenly felt heavy and her bump began to tighten and hurt. Her eyes watererd as she gasped for air, struggling to breathe.

All of a sudden, her waters broke, creating a puddle beneath her feet. "Argh!" she screamed, as an agonising pain washed over her. Common sense told her to get to a hospital but her heart told her to stay. She wanted to wait until her husband had returned home from his trip. "Argh!" Mona screamed, tears ran down her face. Mona clutched tightly at the bed covers, unable to stand any longer, she crumbled to the floor. She tried for the second time to call for her husband. The phone began to ring. "Hello?" Adam greeted. Mona didn't know whether she wanted to scream at him or beg him to return home. She quickly decided that both would be more deserving. "Adam, why was your phone turned off? I have been trying to call you!" she screamed. "Sorry, I was in the cinema with Laura." Adam explained. Mona shook her head, not caring to listen to his excuses. Mona regained her strength to breathe. "I was calling you because my water had broken." she told him shortly. "Argh!" she yelped, biting her lower lip to control her contractions. "Call an ambulance and then I will meet you at the hospital." he told her calmly. Mona took a deep breath, refusing to listen. She grabbed a fistfull of her curly, brown hair. She was in no condition to take orders. She knew Adam could be stubborn and was clearly not going to change his plans lightly. She could already imagine him running his fingers through his thick, black hair that he spent so long spiking up. He also stood at six foot tall, which made her look more of a dwarf compared to his size. As angry as she was, she was already missing him and his muscular tanned body and the comforting hugs that always made her feel loved."No. I am not going to the hospital until you come home. I am not going without you!" she told him violently. Adam let out a sigh of impatience and disappointment. Mona rolled her eyes, her moods began to darken some more. "Fine" she spat "come home when you want. I shall call the midwife and go to the hospital." Adam began to speak, trying to sound reasonable. "I will be on my way. I can start coming back in five minutes. So please just calm-" That was enough, Mona cut in bitter and feeling furious. "Don't you dare tell me to calm down! I am in labour now! The baby is coming now!" she screamed. Then, in a fist full of rage, she hung up the phone and slammed it on to the pillow beside her bed.

Mona gave herself a minute to calm her anger, and then dialled the hospital delivery suite. "Hello" greeted the operator. Mona restrained herself from screaming down the phone line. "Hello, my waters broke and I am in agony. Do I take a bath and wait for an ambulance or midwife?" Mona screamed in pain once again, and the midwife called for an ambulance. "There is an ambulance coming for you now. Where are you?" she asked. Mona gasped, trying not to push. "I am at...16...hilbilly road..." she panted. "Hurry...up...feel like...pushing." Mona said.

The ambulance arrived a few minutes later, barely giving her enough time to double check her hospital bags. She grabbed both bags and waddled painfully over to the back doors of the ambulance and placed the bags next to her. The paramedics handed her the gas and air, which didnt work. In agonising pain, she sucked in the gas and air greedily, hoping that she would feel at least a little better.

Mona was in the middle of pushing the baby's head out when Adam finally arrived at the hospital. "how are you feeling?" he asked her. Mona glared at him as he stood over her. "I am half naked, pushing out a baby. How the hell do you think I feel?" she said angrily. Adam stood over her and laughed. "You are doing a pretty good job though." he complimented. He dug his hand into his coat pocket and pulled out a small box. "I have bought you a present." he grinned. He handed the small box to her, placing the box in the palm of her hand. Mona opened the box and gasped. It was an eternity ring, decorated with pink and white stones. "Oh thank you! It's gorgeous!" she gleamed, suddenly no longer feeling angry. "You have a present from me and the baby too." Mona grinned.

The baby was born an hour later. "Please pass my hospital bag" Mona sighed. She was exhausted. Adam passed her the bag. She opened the bag and got out two small boxes. Mona passed him the smallest box first. It was labelled "From Natasha". He opened the box slowly. Inside was a ring, and it said "Dad" in white diamonds. He grinned, looking like he was about to cry. "Thanks honey" he said cheerfully, and leant over to kiss the baby's forehead. Then I passed him the slightly larger box. He opened the box and smiled. It was an eighteen carot gold chain to wear around his neck. "Thank you," he said quietly "I love you".

There it was, the thing that she had been longing to hear. He loved her. Only her. "I love you too." she told him, They embracing eachother, being careful not to squash the new born baby. They shared a passionate kiss and finally parted, feeling over whelmingly emotional. "Let's go home." Adam said happily.
