Louisa

Sitting here, I am thinking back to the first day I saw Louisa. Matthew and I werenโ€™t blessed with children, and I so longed to be a mother. I had so much love to give, and at three, I had hoped she wouldnโ€™t remember her own family and the neglect she suffered. She was so shy and undernourished. The funny thing is, she has the same skin coloring as Mathew, and I feel she was meant just for us.

โ€œThis is a delightful spot for us to sit and read our book, with the bench planted just as carefully as the Azaleas and the Heather. Lets stop and Iโ€™ll let Trevor rest on my lap. He must be tired from our walk.โ€

โ€œMama I do so love coming down and watching the trains. There is something so familiar, like I belong here.โ€

โ€œBe careful, try not to get dirty, sweetheart. Weโ€™re having company for dinner. Do you see that house beyond the train tracks?โ€ I asked.

โ€œYes, I see it,โ€ she said with her face pressed up against the wrought iron fence.

โ€œPapa has asked the man who lives there to come for dinnerโ€ฆto talk about painting your portrait.โ€

Iโ€™d barely gotten the words out when she asked, unconcerned about Monsieur Manet, โ€œMama have you ever gone anywhere on the train?โ€

โ€œA few times, sweetheart. Donโ€™t you want to listen to me read? And what do you mean familiar?โ€
โ€œHe smiles and waves at me whenever the train passes.โ€

โ€œWho, darling?โ€

โ€œThe man driving the train.โ€

I had never paid much attention to the passing trains, but now it hit me. The morning Matthew and I picked up Louisa from the orphanage, I found a conductorโ€™s brass button pinned to her blanketโ€ฆ
