When You Really Shouldn't Play The Oboe

In the pouring rain, I’m alone. I’m sure of it. You see, I’m always paranoid about other people. It’s been like that for a hundred years now. Ever since I became a vampire and killed my entire town, the Dracula Society has been after me. My name is Lexi Starr, and this is my story. I’m living in the house I used to live in with my mother. Now I live alone. Here in Galesburg, ghosts of my past constantly haunt me, but I like it that way. At least it reminds me of the pain I caused everyone I loved. I made a mistake. And today, I might be able to change it.

Recently, the Dracula Society has emailed me telling me that they have invented a time machine, and that they are willing to let me test it out. They told me I could go back and change what happened when I first became a vampire. And I decided to do it. So here I am. And here I wait.

After a while, a car pulls up. It’s a black Mustang. I assume this is my ride. I get in.
“Long time, no see, Lexi.” I see the man in the car. It’s one of the two men who came to tell me that I was a vampire in the beginning.

“Yeah, ok then.” I hop in the passenger seat, and we speed off into darkness.

When we get to the castle, it’s early morning. I didn’t realize that Dracula’s Castle was that far away. The first time I was there, I was knocked out on the way there. This time around, I hoped my stay there would be more pleasant.

We walk in. The man leads me down a long hall, and through a few doors. He takes me into a lab. It’s huge. Then he walks right toward the wall. He pressed one of the white bricks and a secret door swung open. Inside it, there was the time machine.

“This is the Twister 1000.” He said.

“Sounds like a carnival ride.” I say.

“This is serious business. No joking around.”

“Whatever. Just tell me how to do it.” We walk to the time machine.

“You set your desired time right here, and then you step inside this chamber here, and we will press this button, and you will go back into the past, so you can change your actions. When do you want to go to?”

“The night that I was here.” He sets the timer. I step inside the time machine. I watch him push the button. And then everything went dark.

While I was blacked out, the man came into my dreams. He explained to me that I was going to be in the body I had before this happened. But I would still know everything that I know now. That, I was thankful for. After a while of drifting in sleep, I woke up. I was in the room that I had first woken up here when I came here the first time.

It was all the same. It was like I was the only one who knew that I had gone back in the past. I went to lunch. Jackson Blane came and sat by me. Some weird chick told me to stay away from her boyfriend. But this time, that night I didn’t escape.

The next day, some of the adult vampires explained to me that if I left the castle before they gave me their blessing, I would become crazily bloodthirsty. I didn’t know that before I escaped last time. How smart am I? They told me that I could go into town to go shopping and things like that, but never for more than a day at a time.

That day, I met some people at lunch. Jackson sat by me again, much to his girlfriend’s, whose name is Amanda, dismay. Also, a girl named Olivia sat by me. She’s a band geek, like me. She told me that Amanda was a total crazy. Not that I didn’t know that already. Like me, Olivia was one of those girls who wore black eyeliner (my mother called me Raccoon Girl) and dyed her hair black (Mom nearly killed me for that) and was completely rebellious.

When I went back to my room, I found my oboe there. I immediately started playing. I had been playing for at least a half an hour when someone knocked at my door. Oh crap, I thought, now I’m annoying people with my terrible oboe playing. When I opened my door, it was Olivia.

“Do you play the oboe?”

“Yeah, why?” I asked.

“I play the saxophone!” Ok then, I think to myself. “You are so good at playing! Have you ever thought of going professional?”

“Um, no, I really didn’t think I was that good.”

“Well, you are. I know people, and I could so get you an audition for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, or whatever it’s called.”

“Really? Do you think they would let me in?”

“I know they would. You’re amazing.”

“Um, when can you get the interview?”

“I can talk to them today.” She whips out her cell, and dials a number. “Hello? Hi. My friend Lexi is, like, the most amazing oboe player ever, and I was wondering if you could get her an audition? Really? When? Great! Well, I’ll tell Lexi. Ok, bye.”

“You can get in on Saturday at 10 am. Now all we need is for one of the adults to go with us. If one comes with us, we won’t get all crazy bloodthirsty. Oh, can I go with you? I’ve always wanted to.”

“Of course, of course. Saturday is tomorrow, we better get packing.”

And that was that. We took a plane to Chicago, and got into this amazing hotel. There was this huge pool. But we didn’t have that much time to spend there, about an hour, before my audition.

And then we were off. We took a taxi to the building that my audition was being held at. I was wearing some dark blue jeans and a silk wraparound top. And high heels. A normal outfit for me. And then we were there. I have my oboe with me, of course. And as we’re heading towards the door everything is going fine. Until, when we’re about three steps away, we heard a gunshot. And with my luck, of course it’s heading right towards me.
And then my vampire senses kick in. I jump about 10 feet in the air, turn upside down, and land on my feet, dodging the bullet completely. I see a man running towards us. Unfortunately, I don’t see the guy behind me. He grabs me, and more come out and grab Professor King, who came with us, and Olivia.

“Surrender now, bloodsucking scum!” the man holding me screams. I try to fight back. I try to help the others. But was it enough? Of course not. The guy just knocks me out. Once again, just my luck.
