Waiting on the side of the road for someone, anyone.
No one knows me here. My family is already dead, long dead. I have seen few since my unplanned, unpleasant sojourn. Those who do see me think I am already dead. Oh, how I wish it were that way. If only I could already be dead, be with my family. I want to go away. I donβt want to exist.
The birds occasionally come to pick at my flesh, but I can still shoo them away. I donβt count them as alive, though, and certainly not as company. They are heartless. If I let them, the birds will rip me to shreds and eat my entrails. It matters not if I let them, for they will do their task soon enough. I want to let them devour me, but it is an excruciating terror.
I feel myself losing. Losing faith, losing spirit, losing life.
But when I think about the world and the places Iβve been, I realize how insignificant I am. What did I do with my time? I did not create. I did not destroy. I just lived. I only went through my life functions. I was useless, and I am still a waste of space.
My role in the world is simple. It is to live and die. Some were born to do great things, others to do terrible things. I am neither.
It is coming. My death. My sweet relief. The birds will complete my time here.
What am I? I am nothing. Soon they will have a name for me, or a number. I will be a brief memory. A piece of trash.
Waiting on the side of the road for someone, anyone.
No one will come to my aid. It is far too late. No one cares.
No one cares for road kill.
