I trailed home from a hardworking day at school. My trainers were pinching my toes, but I walked ahead, desperate to get home soon. Ellie was going to Florida for a month, leaving me alone. That wasn’t the bad part. The bad part was, I had never been on holiday and I was envious of Ellie. I desired to visit theme parks, do fun shopping, and have wild days out. I mostly wanted to go to a peaceful Island, surrounded by blue waves. I would never afford it, though I just wanted to chill out, away from all my problems.
My mum and dad divorced when I was six. Neither of them wanted me so I lived with my Auntie. I called her by her name, Jenny. Jenny called me by my name, Lisa. Jenny didn’t have much money so I never had much stuff. I never complained because Jenny tried hard to keep me happy. Now that I was thirteen, I helped Jenny cook and I was quite good at it. I was going to cook Ellie a cake before she went to Florida. I spilled the news to Jenny the minute I got home. “When is she going?” Jenny asked, hovering. “Next week”. “Well she’s lucky. She must be excited” Jenny said. I nodded. She was very lucky indeed. “When I become a writer, I’m going to take you everywhere and buy you a big mansion” I told her. She laughed. “Oh darling, I wish I could take you somewhere. If I find a good job, I promise I’ll take you anywhere. And I’ll quit my old job at that rubbish shop” She said. Jenny knew I wanted to go. She was like my mother. I wish she was. I hated my real mum, who dumped me. My dad use to visit me for the first couple of months but now he never did. Good riddance. I knew they never liked me let alone love me. But Jenny, she did.
“I’m going to stay in a posh hotel and go to this big water park” Ellie gabbled at school. Our English teacher handed out leaflets from the head. Everyone threw them but I kept it. I saw a competition with two thousand pounds reward. You had to write a story and I was good at writing. If I had two thousand pounds, I could go on holiday. I knew there wasn’t much chance, but I could try. It took me a few days to finish the story. I didn’t tell Jenny about the competition.
I cooked Ellie’s cake as soon as I finished my story. I squirted ‘have fun’ with chocolate icing. “That looks yummy” Jenny said. It did. I was tempted to gobble it up but I gave it to Ellie one day before she went. “Oh Lisa. Thank you so much. I’m going to miss you” Ellie said. “Me too” I said and we hugged.
It was boring without Ellie but Jenny took me out a lot. We went to parks, fairs, and around the town. We didn’t buy stuff but it was fun having a look around. Ellie called me a few days later. She told me she was having so much fun, and she wished I was there too. I wished it too. I wanted her to be with me but I didn’t mind too much. I had so much homework from school so I concentrated on that. I helped do the housework with Jenny too.
On Saturday morning, Jenny handed me an envelope. It was for me. “Is that from Ellie?” Jenny asked. “I don’t know” I said, tearing it open. I read the letter and gasped. “Oh what is it? Is she in hospital?” Jenny said frantically. “Look” I croaked. She snatched the letter and read. “Oh my god! You won two thousand pounds! You’ve been chosen out of hundreds. When did you enter? You never told me! There going to share your story worldwide! Oh Lisa, I’m so proud” Jenny cried. We kept the cheque in my drawer. “We’re going to go on holiday to ... Dubai! We’ll stay in a hotel and-” “And that’s it. You can only afford to go there and the hotel. Remember its two thousand, not two million” Jenny said. “Oh yeah. Well... I have an idea. We’ll go to a nearby Island. I’ll keep the rest for when I’m older” I said.
Jenny booked to stay in an Island. It was in the UK of course, but it was wonderful. We stayed in a small hotel overlooking the sea. We slept in a comfy room but we stayed outdoors mostly. The company we went with had a friendly team with us who served us breakfast, lunch and dinner. They gave us activities to do with the other people who came to stay and at night the place looked wonderful. The dark sky was filled with stars and the island was silent apart from our voices. “This is so fun and peaceful. I want to stay here forever!” Jenny said. “I know. I can’t believe I won. I’m so lucky. They chose me out of everyone. It’s my lucky break” I said. “The ferry is coming tomorrow. Our last night. It’s a bit small this place though” Jenny said. “Yeah but I like it that way” I said. The Island stay was the best time I ever had and I loved it. I was so lucky to win out of all of those people. My dream really did come true. I love travelling and I wish I could travel all my life. Maybe, one day...Me, Jenny and maybe Ellie could travel around the world by a boat... I guess its luck. I got lucky and could get lucky again
The end!
