but now he was gone. The only family member he had ever known was murdered. If he didn’t take action and avenge his death, he wouldn’t be able to live with himself. Jackson had to be defeated. The sword Sollamance held suddenly changed to a thick, black smoke. The smoke slithered like a snake down Sollamance’s arm and into his sleeve. Sollamance sort of looked liked an evil wizard from an old-time earth movie. He had an enforced, black torso with similar looking greaves. His sleeves, however, were loose from the shoulder down as well as a cloak-like bottom that went down to the ankles, covering the greaves. His long pitch black hair and menacing red and black eyes really added to the sinister vibe Jason had about the Quixon man. It was no wonder the Quixons were feared.
“We are done for the day,” Sollamance declared.
“No,” Jason said, “I want to keep going,”
“Forget it, kid. I have business to attend to. We will meet again in two moons.”
“Why so long?”
“Like I said, I have business to attend to. I am very busy. But don’t worry. We will work extra hard when I get back. You aren’t the only one who needs you to reach you potential.”
“And what exactly does that mean?” Jason questioned.
“Another time, boy” Sollamance said. He backed away into the shadows leaving only his ominous eyes visible. When his eyes closed, he was gone. Sollamance’s abilities were unquestionably great. He was nearly undetectable, impossibly fast, and had a dark-hearted will. Although he was helping him, Jason didn’t fully trust Sollamance. He definitely wasn’t going to mention a thing about his friends. If he opened up to Sollamance, then perhaps he would open up a little more about the Quixons. Sollamance had been very helpful so far. Jason could feel himself getting stronger every time. His senses were getting sharper. Helpful or not, Jason wasn’t about to risk his friends safety for information he may or may not get.
Jason took flight for home, leaving their Arizona training ground in ruins. They had definitely made it look like a battleground. As he flew, he thought about the story his uncle had told him when he was younger. He was about 10 years old when his uncle finally decided to answer a question he had been asking for years. Since he was old enough to realize that he didn’t have a mother or father, Jason wanted to know why. His uncle spoke of his mother as though she were a goddess. He saw her as one of the greatest beings to ever exist. His father was hardly mentioned though. One day, Jason returned home from school for the weekend and demanded an answer. Much to Jason’s surprise, his uncle agreed to give him one.
He began by speaking of the planet Forge, on which the Aspen existed. He described Forge’s surface being much like Earth’s. There were no deserts on Forge, only jungles and cities. There were thousands of species of life within the jungles. The only sophisticated life forms were the Aspen. There was one large body of water that took up a good third of the planet’s surface. There were cities large than any one Earth. They had peace. They had order. The Aspen people were brilliant. Every day, they dedicated time to making their way of life safer and more productive.
Although the Aspen were a peaceful race, they were bred as warriors. They went through training much like Jason’s. The Aspen were peacekeepers on their section of space. Forge had four neighboring planets, each with its own race of intelligent life. The planets, Forge, Sarve, Vice, Yoven, and Kabel, all worked in unison to provide for the others. Yoven was a farming planet that grew crops and bred livestock that would all be transformed into food for the five planets. The farmers were of a race known as Darsies. They were good at their jobs, but had no means of protecting themselves. That’s where Kabel came in. Kabel was an industrialized planet that created machines to better help the planets. They created everything from defense systems to modern cleaning accessories. Kabel’s inhabitants were quite unique in the fact that they could alter their bodies into different shapes. They could turn their arms into tools or weapons simply at will. The inhabitants of Kabel, the Shifters, were able to create many types of machinery that could be used as enhancements for the surrounding planet’s way of living. With all of the defense systems, there would be no way an outside force could get in without everyone knowing about it. Even once the outsiders were detected, the defense cannons would be able to obliterate any threat.
Vice was the medical world. They had resources that could treat any wound or cure any disease. The doctors were born and raised to know all of the known medical procedures by the time they reached their fifteenth year. Once they had reached maturity, which in the eyes of the Inots was seventeen, they began testing and experimenting with their own new medicines to find faster and easier cures and treatments. The last planet however was different from the rest. Sarve was a planet that didn’t have much of a population. The entire planet had approximately 1.5 million forms of intelligent life. The Sarvanians were hard working and strong willed. They needed much from the other planets and had little to offer in return. In order to stay in the five planet circle, the Sarvanians devoted their time as a labor force that would work for the other four planets when they were needed. Although it was a small part, the other species agreed that it was enough.
All of the species lived together in harmony for centuries. The Aspen kept the peace over the others. It was a perfect way of living. The Aspen were ruled over by a king and a queen. The queen’s name was Zilah Shard, Jason’s mother. Zilah, as Jason’s uncle described her, was a beautiful woman with long brown hair and pure, blue eyes. Her royal uniform was nothing more than a white dress and a golden crown, as she decided. Alfred had told Jason that he and his mother were much alike. They both tried to see the good in others. They were always looking to help those in need. And the one thing that had stuck out above all was that they each had the strongest wills in the universe. The king, Jason’s father, had not been mentioned much by his uncle. Alfred had said he was an incredibly strong man with tremendous power, but it was never fully explained to him what those powers were. Jason knew that if his mother had married and conceived a child with this man, whether he’d been Aspen or Quixon, he couldn’t be all that bad. The Aspen had a wonderful way of life. Everything about Forge and its inhabitants was magnificent. That is, of course, until the one day where everything went wrong.
The Aspen were awaiting their shipment of food from Yoven. It was unusual for it to be late, but everyone made mistakes now and then. It had been about three days late when the Aspen finally decided to contact Yoven about the missing shuttle. Each planet had a hologram projection device that allowed the planets to communicate without having to travel from planet to planet. Queen Shard had tried numerous times to contact Yoven, but an audience was never established. So on the fifth day, she sent a shuttle of her own to Yoven. On that shuttle were seven soldiers and an officer. It arrived within hours and was ordered to personally meet with the Darcie King. The shuttle reached the atmosphere, expecting to be stopped and forced to state their purpose on the planet, all thanks to the defense systems. Much to the Aspen’s surprise, the defense system did not stop them. The shuttle proceeded to the surface, but with caution. The Aspen officer and his squad landed on Yoven and immediately found that there was something wrong. The planet that was once filled with fields of food and pastures of farmland was barren and empty. As far as the eye could see; everything looked desolate. Everything looked dead.
The Aspen from the shuttle flew to the Yoven capitol in order to find out what exactly was going on. As they flew, the Aspen soldiers all felt a deep dark feeling about what had happened on Yoven. They flew for miles when they finally came upon on of the most horrific sights they had ever seen in their lives. The capitol city, where the majority of the Darcie people lived, now lay in ruins. In shock and awe, the Aspen soldiers watched the pillars of smoke billow from the once peaceful cities of Yoven. Although Alfred was not on this Intel mission, he described the rest of the mission as told by two of the Aspen soldiers that returned from the shuttle. When the expedition group went into the ruins of the capitol, they were attacked by shadowy monstrosities. They had piercing red eyes and pale skin. The Aspen soldiers fought against the groups of creatures, but none of them had ever encountered such an evil. They simply weren’t ready for anything this horrible.
The Aspen used weaponry and their flames to push back the horde of monsters. In the journey back to the shuttle, only two survived. They returned to Forge to inform the Queen of what had happened, but the two soldiers only had time to find Alfred before the attack struck home. The monsters called themselves Quixons. The Aspen and the Quixon fought for six days straight. Although the Aspen were strong, the Quixons attacked in the shadows, picking the soldiers off slowly. On the sixth day, the Quixons were at the castle walls. Alfred described this as the day Jason’s father died. The sound of swords clashing rang through the air like rain in a thunderstorm. The Quixon seemed to come out of thin air. They were ruthless and blood-thirsty. The Quixon soldiers were truly the pure essence of darkness. Seeing her people’s fate before her eyes, Queen Shard, in a desperate attempt to save the bloodline, sent her son to a far away planet with Alfred. Alfred took one of the few remaining spaceships left on Forge, in search of a planet where they could escape the darkness of the Quixon. That’s when he found Earth.
Jason knew the rest of the story from there. Jason knew his uncle wouldn’t lie to him, but perhaps he left out some important details. Could his uncle really not have told him the truth about his father in order to protect him? And what of his mother? Was it possible that she survived? Jason knew that there was no way to be sure about any of it. He only had to believe the story his uncle told him. The only thing that mattered now was the present. Jason needed to unlock his power. He needed to defeat Jackson. It was the only way the people of Earth could live in peace. On his way home, Jason dropped off in a little town for something to drink. He walked into a small restaurant and took a seat in a booth. A young, smiling waitress approached his table with an apron and a writing pad.
“How’s it going today, sir?” she said smiling.
“Not bad,” Jason said with a smile, “How about yourself?”
“Couldn’t get much better than this. What’ll ya have?”
“I’ll just take a Coke,”
“Hate to say it, but we’ve only got Pepsi.” She said with a genuine frown.
“Wow, that kinda sucks,” Jason said picking his drink menu back up trying to decide, “coulda used one of those.”
“Tell you what…I don’t like Pepsi all the much either, so
“We are done for the day,” Sollamance declared.
“No,” Jason said, “I want to keep going,”
