Jackson’s power. Jason went to make a move, but before he could, Jackson impaled Matt with his blade. Jason froze in horror of the sight he was seeing. He removed the sword and dropped Matt of the cliff. He turned to Jason with the red Quixon eyes. He laughed as the sky began to grow cloudy.
“You knew this day would come!” Jackson said in a deeper voice than usual.
Jason turned to run, but Jackson was already behind him. He used the darkness to pin Jason against his house. He lifted his blade with both hands and held it at about shoulder height. He brought it forward, stabbing Jason in the heart. He laughed as blood poured from Jason’s body. Jason choked on blood as Jackson began to speak.
“Don’t worry. Your death is going to be much shorter than dear little Sarah Williams.”
Jackson removed the blade and laughed menacingly. Jason tried to move, but couldn’t. This was it. He had let his friends down. And now, the rest of the world was as defenseless as Sarah was. The pain was unbearable. He was going to die a failure. Suddenly, Jason woke up in a sweat on his couch. He looked around to see his friends all still sound asleep. The room was still dark. Jason peered over to the clock to check the time and was shocked to find that it was nearly twelve thirty. He got up from the couch and looked out the window. It was a complete downpour outside. He wondered how his house would hold up if the weather got bad, but didn’t let it get to him. The only thing louder than the thunder outside was Josh’s snoring. He wasn’t quite sure of what it was, but deep inside he had a feeling that today was only going to get darker…
Jason moved into the kitchen and found his phone. He flipped it open to find that he had a new message from Kris. Jason clicked the message open. Kris was suggesting that they should hang out someday after school. Jason wasn’t a fan of texting that much and figured he’d just see him at school. He closed and slid it across the counter top. He opened his fridge in search of food. As soon as he had taken the orange juice from the top shelf, his friends ‘suddenly’ began waking up. Josh sat up and began looking around, a little dazed. Jason pulled some breakfast from the freezer and within about twenty minutes, the four friends were all gathered around the table eating.
None of them had changed out of their dress clothes. Each of them still looked like they had come from a late night party. Their shirt collars were unbuttoned and their ties loosened. Each of them had messy, uncombed hair and shared the look of exhaustion in their eyes. The guys began talking about the Jaguar Jungle game that was coming up in about a month. Jason had been to the game the past few years. It was a pretty fun night where the football team would split up and play each other under the lights in front of the large crowd. It was a good way for the seniors to finish their last football season. Josh was thinking about playing in the upcoming game. He was really working hard to start on defense and offense.
Jason listened to his friends talk while he ate his breakfast. The guys all laughed and joked about things from the night before. Tony began talking about his plans to hack past the school’s firewalls to send a teacher spam messages all day long. Jason thought about the events that had occurred recently. His friends had, of course, already become aware of Jason’s new title and most recent act of heroism. Now and then, when it was just them, they would say things such as ‘whatever you say, Mr. Savior’ or ‘oh Jason, won’t you please save me from this Spanish quiz.’ It got a little irritating now and then, but Jason generally let the puns slide. He was now debating about whether or not to share with them the newest information about Sollamance and what his secret desire was. Jason was still having trouble understanding exactly what his motives for wanting to die were, but he had a feeling that when the time came, he would let Sollamance have his wish.
“So, Jason” started Matt, as if reading his very thoughts, “how’s your sadistic Quixon pal?”
“Yeah, is he still out preying on little children at night?” Josh joked.
“Nah, Sollamance is definitely strange, but I don’t think that he goes out and kills for the fun of it. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure that he kills at all.”
“What about all this ‘business’ he has to attend to?” Matt questioned.
“Who knows? All I know is that he stays out of my life and I stay away from his.” Jason said.
“Well are you two making any progress?” Tony asked.
“Yeah, is that big, bad demon coming out yet?” Josh asked while eating another fork full of waffle.
“Well, I’m definitely getting stronger, but it’s hard to tell if I’m anywhere close. Sollamance isn’t much help when it comes to answering when my power is going to come out.” Jason sighed.
“Well what has he said?” Tony asked.
“Well… the other night when we were training…” Jason started, making a pause to set his glass down, “he told me that when all is said and done with this, he wants to die…”
Josh looked confused and said, “Why the hell would he want to die?”
“Yeah,” said Matt, “Isn’t he pretty much a badass?”
“Maybe there is a little more bad to that than we think. He could have done horrible things in his life. This could be a way to answer for everything. He is helping me after all and it’s pretty clear that Jackson is a threat and I am not.”
“I still don’t trust him, man,” Josh said.
“Neither do I, but I need his help. Imagine the things I’ll be able to do in the world with that power.”
“Damn, Jay,” Tony sighed, “I wish we could be out there helping you too,”
“Yeah, the sidelines aren’t the same thing as the real game,” Josh said, “Just think if all four of us had your power. Jackson wouldn’t be around for much longer, now, would he?”
“That’s true,” Jason agreed. He wouldn’t want to put his friends in danger by any means, but to have partners in all of this would truly be great. He had been born with this power, though. As his uncle always described it, it was his gift and his burden.
“Oh…that’s the other thing,” Matt said, putting his fork down on his syrup-lined plate.
“What?” Jason asked.
“We found him,” Matt said, nearly causing Jason to choke on his food, “We finally got a solid picture match on him the other day.”
“Really?” Jason asked, almost in disbelief.
“No, Jason,” Tony said sarcastically, “We just love watching you squirm.”
“Well, where is he?” Jason asked impatiently.
“We are still working on getting his personal records from the company, but he works out of the Anderson building all week long. He only leaves twice a day. Once when he goes to lunch, and another when he goes home for the evening. Where he lives is still unknown, but we figured that it didn’t matter at this point.”
Jason couldn’t believe it. His friends had successfully found him. Jason had scanned the entire city for him for him, but hadn’t ever come close. The two encounters they had were all Jason had managed to get from him. Jason could feel it inside now. It was coming. With his friend’s help in finding Jackson and Sollamance’s ruthless training, it was finally time for him to do his part. He needed to unleash his power.
“That is incredible!” Jason cried, “I can’t believe you got that much!”
“Ehh, it was a peace of cake when we all worked together,” Josh said leaning back in his chair. Tony and Matt shot him glares that cause him to freeze.
“What Josh means,” started Tony, “is that he found everything easy when Matt and I did all the work and he sat there eating us out of house and home.”
“Hey! I helped!” Josh declared.
“Going to the gas station cause we were out of Mt. Dew doesn’t count, Josh” Matt sighed.
“Seemed to count when you needed it,” Josh pouted.
“Either way, thank you, guys.” Jason said with a sincere smile, “I don’t think you guys could have done anything better than this.”
“We are close to getting his personal business record from the company. When we get that, we’ll print it off for you. With that you’ll know his address, birthday, whatever!” Matt said.
“Hell, you could probably find out when he uses the can!” Tony laughed.
“Let me know when you guys get that. It’ll help a great deal in the end.” Jason said.
A beep came from Josh’s phone and he flipped it open. He read something from the screen quickly, and then got up from the table.
“Well, I’d love to stay and continue to stalk this man with you guys, but my parents need me back home. I’ll catch ya later,” Josh said.
“Yeah, it’s probably time I headed out too,” Tony said, followed by an agreeing Matt.
“Alright, I’ll catch you guys back at school tomorrow.”
Jason bid his friends farewell and walked into his bedroom. He changed out of his dress clothes and put on his normal attire. He had to meet up with Sollamance later that night, but had a few hours to kill. He threw on a pair of blue jeans and his black Aspen shirt. He looked at himself in the mirror before he left. He was pleased that the shirt always mended itself. You could hardly tell that he’d ever fought in it. The material was definitely alien to this world, but then again, so was he. He left his home and made a trip to the city. It was a cooler day outside, so before he left, he grabbed a black hoodie as well. The rain was still coming down hard, but he enjoyed it. The water skimmed across his skin as he flew. Part of him wanted to go to the Anderson Building right away and confront Jackson, but he knew he wasn’t quite ready for that.
Instead, he made a trip to the florist in the middle of the city. He walked most of the way, which caused him to receive many funny looks. Most people who were forced to walk held an umbrella above their heads. He finally made his way into the flower shop and picked up a white lily. He had it wrapped up nicely, to prevent damage, and got a little tag to write on. He simply just wrote To remember a great night on the card and then tucked it away in his hoodie pocket. He couldn’t help but remember the words that Sarah had spoken to him. It seemed to make everything else not matter as much. When he thought of her beautiful blue eyes, all he could think of was happiness.
Jason left the city and made his way to Sarah’s house. When he arrived, he could feel that no one was home. He noticed that her bedroom window was open and rain was soaking up on her carpet. He opened the window enough for him to reach through and place the flower on her bed. He closed the window as he left. He wondered if she would question how he got the flower there, but decided that she would think nothing of it. She, much like him, just enjoyed the kind gesture. He’d thought about telling her his secret
