would,” she said.
The two left the house and went to the limo. They got inside where his friends all made smartass remarks.
“Well Jason, looks like you finally did something right.” Josh laughed. His date elbowed him in the gut causing him to grunt.
“You two love birds gonna be trouble tonight?” Tony asked. His date, too, hit him in the gut.
“I…” Matt began. He looked to both sides of him and saw his date and Josh’s date looking back at him, “I have nothing to say.”
Everyone laughed and they finally were off to begin the best night of their lives. They went to a fancy downtown restaurant. They got a large table at the back where the girls and guys all talked to one another. The boys shared jokes with the girls. Tony’s date told an embarrassing joke about Josh’s date, which caused her to counter with a joke about her. They all laughed and began teasing each other with good hearted jokes. The guys ordered steaks and the girls ordered sandwiches and salads. By the end of the dinner, the couples had seemed to be a little more attached to the other. Near the end of the dinner, Josh stood up and made a toast.
“Everyone,” Josh began, holding his glass out, “Tonight is a night that we will always remember. We are surrounded by people that care about us. Tonight is described as a night about finding yourself, but I think that it is just a night where we can enjoy ourselves enough to show the world who we are. Let’s make tonight the greatest night of our lives.”
They all rose their glasses in a toast and drank to it. Josh was right. Tonight was a night that Jason knew he would never forget. He was with all of his friends and the only girl he had feelings for. He couldn’t imagine anything being better than this night. He was going to make the most of everything tonight. They all finished their dinners and drinks and returned to the limo. When they got to the school, everything had already gotten dark. They walked in through big gym doors. The lights were dimmed. The music was loud. Everything was ready. Now it was time to take advantage of it.
They group stayed together for most of the night. At one point, all of the girls left to go to the bathroom. Jason’s friends explained that all girls do that. It’s just their thing. The guys talked about their dates and what their plans were. They agreed on all returning to Jason’s after the dance. The night was truly magical. Jason had managed to forget about everything else that was going on in his life. He forgot about Sollamance and Jackson. He forgot of the Aspen and Quixon. He had even forgotten about his uncle. He was able to put all his troubles past him for the evening.
While Jason’s friends were away getting drinks, his friend Kris came up to him with a friendly smile on his face. Since Jason had helped Kris with his car troubles, they had learned to like one another and could even consider one another pals. He came up wearing a white dress shirt, a black tie, and black pants. He seemed to be in a great mood. Everyone was that night. It was incredible.
“Hey, man” Kris said, “You come here solo?”
“Nah, she’s just in the bathroom,” Jason answered with a smile, “What about you?”
“Nah, couldn’t find anyone. Just thought I’d come a hang out with the crowds. Ya know? Live a little.”
“Sounds like a good idea to me,” Jason said. Matt and the others had returned with plastic cups of soda.
“I’ll catch ya around, Jay,” Kris said turning to leaving, “Enjoy your night,”
Jason was glad to have met Kris. He was easy going and knew how to have a good time. Jason saw him go off into the crowd and engage a group in a dance. He didn’t seem to be talking to a lot of other people at school, but right now, Jason could have mistaken him for the most popular kid in school. He took a sip of his drink and joined the conversation his friends were having about the irritating PE teachers.
The girls returned just in time for the next song. The mood changed in the room. The song wasn’t a fast paced dancing song anymore. Things were slowing down. It was finally time for Sarah and Jason to have a slow dance together. Sarah and Jason walked out to the dance floor, hands locked. They moved to an open space in the crowd and grew close. Jason had heard the song before. It was called “If You Want Me” from a band called ‘One Less Reason’. He had heard the song at the diner where Sarah and he had had their first date. She must have remembered too cause her face lit up and she gripped his hand tight. Jason placed his hands around Sarah’s waist and she wrapped her arms around his neck. The two grew very close and began to dance slowly. Jason and Sarah locked eyes. She looked so beautiful. Her blue eyes reflected the blue lights of the room. Everything seemed so magical.
They danced for a while when Sarah finally spoke.
“Jason…there’s something I’ve been trying to say all night…I just didn’t know how to say it.” Sarah said looking down at the floor.
“And what would that be?” Jason asked. He wasn’t sure exactly was she meant by that. It made him a little nervous.
“I…I don’t know how to say this. I’ve never had to before.”
“It’s alright, Sarah. You can tell me anything. I’ll always understand.” Jason said with a smile. Inside, he felt like that was the most comforting thing to say.
“I think…I might be in love with you, Jason” Sarah said as she looked into his eyes. Jason was completely frozen on the inside. He hadn’t expected that. It made everything tonight feel…perfect.
“Well Sarah…I would have to say that I’m in love with you too.” Jason said.
“Really?” she asked. She looked so happy to hear those words.
“Would I lie to you?” Jason said with a smile. They stared into each others eyes. Their faces grew closer. For a moment, nothing else mattered in the world except for Sarah Williams. She was just…so perfect. They closed their eyes and their lips met. Jason felt a spark between them. Sarah held him tighter, as he did to her. Jason’s heart pounded in his chest. He had never kissed anyone before. No one had ever meant this much to him. Sarah had his very heart and soul. She was his everything. They stopped kissing and opened their eyes. Together, they looked into each others eyes. Sarah’s eyes had tears coming from them. Jason could see by the smile on her face that they were tears of happiness.
“Oh Jason,” Sarah sniffed, “I never wanna let you go.”
“You never have to, Sarah. I’m yours to hold.” Jason said.
Sarah hugged him tight and for once, Jason knew that humans and Aspens could love one another. It also gave him the peace of mind that maybe his mother was right to fall in love with a Quixon. They just stood their holding each other until the song ended. Everything about this night was perfect. Jason couldn’t imagine anything in his life being better than this. They night continued with the group of eight all dancing and enjoying themselves. Something about Sarah and Jason had changed though. Only Jason and Sarah felt it at first, but soon Jason’s friends realized it too. They seemed different together. Before the night was over, every one of them knew it. They truly belonged together.
When the dance ended, the group walked out of the dance more than satisfied. They stood in the parking lot waiting for the limo to pull up. Jason had his arm around Sarah. The night was the most incredible night of Jason’s life. That’s when Jason’s felt it. A chill went down his back. He could feel something…watching him. He looked around, trying to find something. His eyes finally locked on something that stood on the roof. He could see something standing there, just watching. Jason tensed up. It was him. Jackson had followed him the whole night. He was watching his every move. He could see him rise into the night sky and disappear. Everything Jason had managed to forget that night had suddenly all come flooding back to him. He looked back at Sarah, who was looking at him worried.
“Jason, what’s wrong?” she asked.
“It’s nothing,” he said, “Just thought I saw something. Come on, the limo is here.”
Sarah looked at the limo and began to walk with Jason to it. They got in, after all of Jason’s friends and their dates. The limo took each of the girls home. When they dropped Sarah off, Jason got out and walked her to her door. The shared another kiss and Sarah returned into her house smiling. Sarah once again had made Jason feel incredible inside. When he got back in the car, it was just guys left. They all began to talk about the night with one another. Jason knew they all wanted to say something about him and Sarah, but they seemed to be waiting for something. The limousine dropped them at the entrance to the woods that led back to Jason’s place. They all got out and thanked the driver for the night. They walked back to his house laughing the whole way. They opened the door to Jason’s house and all immediately loosed their ties.
“Wow,” Matt sighed.
“Yeah, what a night,” Tony said.
“Ehh, I’ll probably never call her again,” Josh said.
“Dude you’re an asshole.” Tony laughed.
“What are you talking about?” Josh exclaimed, “All she did was nag all night about how we weren’t doing things right. Plus she sucked at kissing.”
“Speaking of kissing,” Matt said, causing all three of the guys to look at Jason.
“What?” Jason said, trying to hide his smile.
“So you and Sarah seemed to have a good night.” Matt said.
“Yeah, it was pretty great.” Jason smiled.
“That means he wants to tap that,” Josh smirked as he took of his shoes.
“Screw off, Josh.” Jason laughed. He knew Josh was only kidding.
“So do you mind if we ask what happened?” Tony said.
“Well…we kissed and…I think I might be in love with her.” Jason said. Matt and Tony smiled.
“Oh really?” Josh said with a grin on his face, “Did she use tongue?”
Matt and Tony both turned and hit Josh in the arm. Josh yelled at them, while rubbing his arm. The four all laughed. They grabbed some drinks from the fridge and plopped down on the couch and chairs. They flipped through the channels and found some comedy movie. Jason had been keeping his friends updated about everything that happened with Sollamance, but he decided it would be best to wait until morning to tell them about Jackson and Sollamance’s secret desire to die. He wanted tonight to end on a high note. He lay back on the couch just thinking that tonight had been a night that he would hold close to him for the rest of his life.
Animal I Have Become
Jason awoke on his couch to find his friends were all gone. He sat up and looked around. Something wasn’t right. All of their stuff was still here. Jason walked outside and looked around. He felt something that struck him with fear all throughout his body. He turned to the cliff side to see Jackson holding Matt by the neck. Jackson had his bloody sword in his hand. Matt was struggling to break free, but couldn’t match up to
