it inside him. The monster was never coming out again.
The last bell rang and Jason met up with his friends outside of school. Matt, Tony, and Jason hung around the school while Josh had a quick thirty minute walkthrough for football. Jason watched as the cheerleaders practiced their stunts on the track surrounding the stadium. The stadium was pretty large. Many people from the city came up to the small town for the football games. It was only about a month until the final scrimmage came up. Josh was looking to play in it, but if he agreed to the Halym idea, then he would no longer be able to play in the sport. It would give him an unfair advantage over everyone else. It would be just as bad as cheating. Jason thought of how fun the game would be. He had gone his freshman year, but missed last year’s. Sarah would be attending with him this year, which would make the night fantastic. He knew he couldn’t play in the game ever, but he wished that he would be able to step out onto the field…just once.
When Josh finished practice, the four friends walked to Jason’s house. When they got their, they set their stuff inside, grabbed some drinks, and sat outside. There wasn’t anywhere to sit outside except for the ground. For now, it was going to have to make due. The cliff that Jason’s house was next to was pretty steep. It probably dropped several hundred feet and wouldn’t be fun for a human to fall from. Jason enjoyed the view the cliff gave him of the city. He could overlook just about all parts of the city from here. If something was going wrong, he could spot it as it happened. The city was actually one of the large cities in the United States. It was about the same size as Seattle. He thought his city did a very good job of taking care of itself. He would hate it if their was a lot of pollution or crime. Luckily, those things were kept to a minimum.
The friends finished their drinks and tossed them aside. Jason asked them to wait outside while he grabbed something. He entered the house and reemerged with the journal. He explained everything that had happened since the robbery. He told them about how there was a Quixon superior on the loose and then about how he had found his uncle’s journal. He gave them the note to read, giving them time to let it all sink in. Josh was the first to finish with the note.
“So, this journal is going to make you stronger?” Josh asked, “I guess reading actually can do some good now and then.”
“Yeah,” Jason agreed, “It seems to have just about every Aspen power and technique every developed in there.”
“And it’s all new stuff?” Tony asked.
“Yep, it’s pretty much all new to me,”
“That’s great, Jason,” Matt said, with excitement, but also a touch of depression. Jason could tell that he didn’t like not being able to do any of these things. That was going to make his next news all the better.
“There’s more,” Jason said with a grin.
“Is there, now?” Matt asked.
“I read about it last night. It’s something my people call a Halym.”
“A Halym?” Josh asked.
“It is a being or beings, such as you three, that are given a fraction of Aspen power, which give them the same abilities as Aspens. They can fly, mask their presences, and even use the heat. That fraction can be adapted and advanced until the Halym is just as powerful as an Aspen.”
Jason watched with a joy as his friends mouths dropped. They couldn’t actually believe what Jason was saying. They were dumbstruck, but at the same time overjoyed.
“It’s a tricky process to perform, but if it is what you guys want…I think I can make you all into Halyms,”
“A-are you joking?” Matt asked, “Is it even a question? Of course we do! I think I can speak for all three of us when I say that we all want to be up there helping you.”
“Abso-frickin-lutly!” Josh agreed.
“You must understand that there will be sacrifices. Josh…I know it will be hard to do, but if I make you a Halym…you cannot play football or any sports for that matter.”
Jason thought Josh would hesitate, but much to his surprise, he seemed surer than ever.
“Jason,” Josh said, “There are more important things out there than a silly game. This is real-life heroism. I would be changing lives. Helping people. I’d be making a shitload more of difference out there with you.”
Jason smiled and nodded to him. As he expected, they were all eager to help Jason. He was a little shocker by Josh’s quick decisions, but it also gave Jason a warm feeling to see where their priorities stood. They, just like him, wanted to help make a difference in the world. Matt used to talk about being a superhero when he and Jason were young, but now he was actually going to get his chance to do what superheroes do. There was only one question left to ask.
“Alright,” Jason said, “who wants to go first?”
“I do,” the three said simultaneously.
“Jason, I owe it to you for your first test to be on me. I still feeling partly to blame for…ya know,” Josh said.
“Alright, Josh. You can go first,” Jason agreed. He knew exactly what he meant by that. Josh wasn’t ever going to live down not being able to stop Jason from killing Jackson. No matter what was said, he simply could not let it go.
Jason and Josh lined up about ten feet from each other. Jason had read that it took complete focus from both send and the receiver. The majority of it was Jason pulling the power out. Josh’s part was a lot easier. They sat on the ground and crossed their legs. Jason told Josh to close his eyes and only do what Jason told him to. Josh agreed and closed his eyes. Jason pushed his hands together, almost like an ancient history Earth monk. It was the way his uncle had taught him to meditate. He let his body and mind become one. He could no longer feel his body. All that he felt was his power flowing like a quick river. He began to focus the power at the center of his chest. He could feel the power flow suddenly change. The power was starting to build up, which was good, but he couldn’t overpower himself.
Jason waited until he had a good amount of power built up and halted the power flow. To him, it was like holding his breath. He was instructed by the book to slowly pull the power out of him in the form of a sphere. He tried to focus on the source of the power he’d built up. It was frustrating because it felt like the he was trying to cup water in a cup full of holes. With one final concentrated effort, Jason slowly removed the portion of his power and manifested it into a small ball of white light.
Josh’s eyes were still closed. Jason finally opened his and saw the energy cupped in his hands. He slowly moved it through the air and towards Josh.
“Josh,” Jason said, “when you feel the energy, just let it enter your body. It’s like holding your breath.”
“This is gonna sting isn’t it?” Josh said.
“Focus,”
Josh refocused and the orb of energy grew closer to him. He could feel the warm energy. Jason slowly pushed the energy into Josh’s chest. Matt and Tony watched quietly as the orb disappeared into Josh’s chest. Josh breathed in as it happened. Jason could no longer feel the energy connection. He opened his eyes and looked at Josh. He was fine. The energy transfer was a success. Josh had become Jason’s first Halym.
“Open your eyes,” Jason instructed.
Josh opened his eyes and the two guys stood up. Matt and Tony approached them with questions for Josh.
“Did it work?” Matt asked.
Josh looked to Tony and grabbed him by the shirt. Effortlessly, Josh lifted him off his feet and into the air. He set him back down and looked at his hands. Jason knew what Josh was feeling. He could feel the power flowing through him. He could feel his senses adapting. He was beginning to feel heat signatures.
“How does it feel?” Jason asked.
“Very strange…but very good.” Josh said with a grin.
Jason continued the same process with Matt and Tony and before long, all three of them had become Halyms. They all had the same reactions to the power. It was one thing to think about it, but it was another to have it pumping through your veins. From their, Jason warned them not to use their powers in public and must only use them under masked presence. Jason began his first lesson with his friends by showing them how to mask their presences. He explained that all they had to do was picture themselves and trick their minds into thinking that there is something covering their faces. It took them a few tries, but they all managed to somewhat mask their presences by the end of the night.
When the sun began to go down, Jason told his friends that tomorrow, after school, they would have another lesson and it would continue that way for as long as it took. Jason’s eager friends agreed to meet back here the second school was over. Jason was overall proud of how his friends had reacted. They had each pretty much just become superhuman, but they all managed to show self control. Jason knew that they would help him out their in the city. When they were ready, Jason could use them for multiple things. He knew that they could help make this world a better place.
Deceived
Jason closed his eyes. He was searching for a heat signature somewhere in the high tree tops. The air was cool and the day was calm. Everything seemed to be standing still. None of the animals in the forest made a sound. The cloudy sky added to the shade that the rainforest trees projected. He was waiting for the next attack. He could feel something moving up above, but couldn’t help but wonder if it was a distraction. He heard a sound to his right and reacted to the coming attack. Matt threw a punch at Jason, but missed his target. Jason leaned away from the hit and kicked Matt’s chest, sending him sailing into a tree. He could feel two more signatures approaching from above. He back flipped away and watched as Tony and Josh missed their marks as well.
Tony and Josh, not ready to give up, jumped in separate directs and tried a duel attack again. Josh tried low kick to the legs, while Tony attempted to swing his elbow into Jason’s chest. Having more fighting experience than both of his friends, Jason knew exactly how to counter. He lunged at Tony before he could follow through with his attack. Jason grabbed Tony by the arm and swung him up into the air. As he ascended into the sky, Jason shot up above him and hit him with a downward kick. Tony rocketed to the ground and right into Josh. To Jason’s surprise, Josh dodged his falling comrade and leapt up at Jason. He clenched his fist, ready to deliver the hit on his friend.
As Josh grew close, Jason clenched his own fist and propelled himself towards him. The two threw punches at the same time, but Jason’s packed more of a punch. Defeated, Josh fell from the sky quickly and hit the ground with a
