bang. Jason slowly landed on the ground and smiled. His friends all got up and walked over to him. Jason was proud of his friends. They had all come so far in the past two weeks. It wasn’t easy to train your body to fly, use powers, and take damage in that small amount of time. They had mastered masking their presences, but fighting and flying was taking a little bit longer. Josh picked up on the flying first, but Matt had incredible agility and balance. He had complete control of the flames as well. Tony was fairly good at both, but was definitely the underdog of the three.
It had been fun for Jason to be the teacher for once. It helped him advance his own powers and clear his mind. When he was training with his friends, he could only think of the good that would come out of it. Every attack meant they were all one step closer to becoming warriors. They all showed great patience and focus in their fighting styles. Josh had some built up anger, but was able to work it in his favor. Quitting the football team hadn’t been an easy thing for him to do. He was starting on the varsity squad as a junior. He had wanted to play in the scrimmage this year, but now knew he wouldn’t get his chance. He was given crap for his decision sometimes when he would walk around the school, but he knew that this was a greater cause.
Matt and Tony hadn’t been involved in any sports, but they also felt like different people when they walked down the halls. Everyone that looked at them wasn’t seeing who they were anymore. They, much like Jason, had a secret life that no one could ever find out about. Matt enjoyed the boost in gym class when they had to run the mile, but he tried to make it look harder than it was. He had never liked the mile before, but now he could have run 10 at a sprint pace and not even broke a sweat. Tony found himself a little disappointed that lifting weights no longer cut it as a workout, but his after school sessions with Jason made up for it. They were all very happy to have become Halyms.
“Great job, guys. You’re beginning to make me sweat,” Jason teased.
“Watch it, Jay,” Josh warmed, “one day; I’ll put the beat down on you.”
“I’ll believe that when I see it,” Matt laughed.
The four friends masked their presences and left the training ground they had chosen for the evening. Jason wanted a place that would help train his eyes and ears opposed to his heat readings. They found a large rainforest in South America that was pretty far from any civilization. It also helped give his friends the element of surprise. They had been many places to train. They started at Jason’s house, but once they got to the more physical aspects, they began to occupy forests and wastelands that were far from any society. They flew high in the clouds to prevent even being spotted from anyone on the ground. Jason wasn’t able to move at his full speed due to the fact that his friends didn’t have his speed, but they still managed to make good time getting back home.
When they finally saw Jason’s house, they landed and went inside for dinner. His friend’s parents were pretty easy going and didn’t mind how long they stayed out or what they did as long as they got dinner and were at least home by curfew. The four friends walked inside and hung around while Jason cooked burgers and French fries. Jason had become a better cook since he’d been living on his own. He had always known how to cook, but the technique wasn’t really his until he tried it out on his own. His friends loved eating over. Jason always had good foods that helped fill them up. While the burgers cooked, Josh clicked the TV on and flipped between sports center and the news. He was anxious to see the injury status on his favorite football player.
When he switched to the news, Jason glanced over to see yet another news report on him. Four days ago, he had stopped an out of control monorail from breaking off the unstable tracks, saving nearly sixty lives. Jason considered himself lucky to be in the area. He managed to stop the monorail nearly seconds before it hurdled onto the street below. Upon further inspection, the police found that the conductors had been stabbed and the engine speed cracked to max. The adjustment device for the speed had also been broken off and was nowhere to be found. The police were out on a manhunt for this mysterious killer in town. Random abductions and murders had been happening around the city, where the killer wouldn’t leave as much as a single fingerprint.
Jason had been looking into the case since before the bank robbery. He suspected the Quixon involved with the robbery was committing these random actions of crime to toy with him. Luckily, Jason had managed to stop the majority of the crimes before they got bad, but he never managed to catch the criminal in the act. Every time he thought he’d found something, the trail went cold. The Quixon superior was clever and very good at covering his tracks. Of course, Jason knew the murder of the two conductors had been done with a Quix blade, but the police would continue to suspect the wrong people and eventually the case would go cold. Crimes in the city had to be big to stick around for awhile. With such a big city, the precincts were forced to drop a case after about a month if the criminal hadn’t been caught.
He asked Josh to turn up the volume as he listened to the police chief present his details about the murders. He suppressed exactly how bad it had been by simply saying that the two conductors had been stabbed by an unknown assailant who fled the scene after sending the train thundering down the tracks. He then spoke of how his precinct had found a connection between the crimes of the past weeks. In every crime, one of the witnesses or apprehended thugs had encountered a man with red and black eyes. No security cameras have been able to help them in capturing the convict either. All the footage had either been mysteriously deleted or just wasn’t good enough to make out any details. Jason knew that the Quixon had something to do with that as well. They were tricky and smart. They wouldn’t make a single mistake.
His friend knew the same information that he did about all of this. They, too, had been helping Jason find the superior. He was blending in somewhere, but that somewhere was harder to find than they had originally thought. Jason desperately wanted to put an end to the murders, but he also feared the moment when he crossed paths with the Quixon. Sollamance was strong enough, but to even think of the power his superior possessed worried him. He knew that when the moment came, he would have to fight to the death. No matter what.
Jason put the burgers and buns on the table and his friends scrambled over to them. They truly knew hunger now that they had been training with Jason. They could always eat a lot, but now, between the four of them, Jason had to prepare fifteen half-pound burgers just to fill them all up. As they all sat down, Jason could hear the chief start to talk about the Savior. He made a few comments after the reporter asked him his views on the Savior. He mentioned that the Savior added to the help out there, where otherwise things could have gotten a lot worse. The thing he did next surprised him. He looked to the camera as though he were talking to Jason.
“Savior,” the chief said, “If you are out there and can hear me, please help us bring this criminal to justice. I fear only the worse if we cannot catch him soon.”
Jason felt the man’s words hit him. The city wasn’t relying on him, which was good, but now they were asking him for his help. He felt as though he had more of a responsibility now. They needed him to save them and catch the Quixon. He had a duty to the people…and he was prepared to fulfill it.
The news broadcast channeled off to pointless celebrity drama and Josh switched back to sports. As they ate, Jason talked about what they would be doing tomorrow. Jason was going to take his friends to the training ground his uncle used to take him to. There, his uncle had set up a target range where they could learn to focus their powers upon a single object and increase power. They seemed excited about the whole idea and began ask Jason if he had learned any other tricks from the journal. Honestly, Jason had learned a lot about how he could use his powers, but hadn’t gotten to test them out yet. He agreed to show them a form of the flame power tomorrow that he wanted to try.
On that note, his friends finished their dinners and went home for the evening. Jason spent the rest of the night on his math and physics homework. He wasn’t a huge fan of numbers, but figured it was a good skill to have for the future. When he went to bed, he managed to sleep peacefully for the first time in awhile. There were no nightmares or cold sweats. He had a calm dream of him and Sarah staring up at the stars. He turned to her and asked her if she really loved him. She smiled and said there could be no one else. He proceeded to carry her up into the sky. She was shocked at first, but accepted it pretty quickly. The two of them drifted through the night in happiness, never wanting to let go.
Jason awoke the next morning with a smile on his face. He had the strongest feeling inside that today was going to be a great day. He left his house and went to school in a great mood. The day wasn’t any different than usual. He got the normal lectures from teachers and mingled with his friends as he usually did. He didn’t see Kris at school that day, but figured he was just sick. He and Kris had become pretty good friends. He was an honest and direct guy who seemed to live freely. He was pretty humorous and always seemed to walk around with a can do attitude. The strangest part about Kris was that Jason never saw him with any of his other friends. He said he’d moved here from down south, but Jason figured he would have picked up a few more friends during the time that had passed.
At lunch, the four guys sat at their usual table with pizza that was served every Thursday. They talked about the upcoming football scrimmage again that was now only two weeks away. Josh, although he was no longer playing, still wanted to go to the game and have a good time. They all decided that they would meet up there. Jason admitted that he would likely go with Sarah and his friends gave him their typical taunts. He didn’t mind them that much, mainly because he knew they didn’t mean them. And even if they did mean what they said, he wouldn’t mind. He and Sarah were happy and nothing was going to ruin that.
After school had finished, Jason found Sarah in the library again. She had been coming here for the past two weeks,
