I felt a hand slightly hit my shoulder as I still looked down at myself. "You've definitely got it." And all I could think to myself is, 'What've I got?' And 'What is a Demener?'
We worked on some techniques he said that I was lacking. My aim and my reflexes could use more work but his main concern was predicting the next move. There was a hole imprinted in the wall where Duke slammed into it and cracks ran in all directions. Yet, he didn't even show any sign of being hurt. I was going to start pressing some questions but I felt it best to just keep quiet and maybe he'll let some pity truths out. Nothing worked with Conner when you pushed for answers. Other than secrets, all he has for him is his good looks and a head full of knowledge. He's really just a slag who can't be bothered to turn up most of the time.
After at least an hour and a half of being all over the place with Duke helping me with handling weapons such as a bow and daggers, we sat down on one of the padded mats on the ground just under a sky light. I had a water bottle in my hand he gave to me earlier and I squeezed it as it ran down my throat. Gulping it down like it was going out of fashion, I pulled my hair up into a ponytail. Duke ran a hand through his own. And then took a mouthfull from his bottle. I was constantly huffing and trying to catch my breath. Closing my eyes and counting until my heart slowed alittle.
I opened my eyes at Duke peering at me. "How do you do it?" He said with an almost excited tone. I had one leg crossed and one leg straight as I did a stretch so I'd touch my toes. "Do what?" I replied as I breathed deep.
"The way you moved before. You've never done training before and you were already at it like you've been doing it for years." He said with a slight undertone.
"Well, maybe I have. Never thought of that did ya?" I said as I swapped legs and then stretched.
"You know what I mean. You know you haven't done it before, but yet you already had all of that suppressed inside of you. It's just something... I've never seen it before." He whispered the last part almost to himself.
Even thought I had 101 questions, I kept it to a cool low and just slipped a few. "So, this training is supposed to be for this thing called the- Demona?" I said as I bent both legs and bent the knees down like my old dance teacher used to always do after we did a warm up. He lifted himself up off the ground and crossed his arms as the muscles were shadowed all in the right places from the low lighting from the dark sky.
"Demener, you mean. Yes, this training will help you succeed. And I guess you're wondering what it is since you can't even say it right." He said and I quickly shot back, "Hey!" And he just smirked and tapped his chin with his index. "Hmmm." He looked up at the sky light and then his index found me and moving up and down like it was tapping his chin again or a table.
"You. There's something about you and I plan on finding it out." He said and then his gaze came back down to me. His dark blond hair slightly falling into his eyes. "I just don't understand how unbelieveably shocking you are." He said and I didn't even think but I automatically looked down at myself checking if there was something on me and I quickly patted my face checking for anything that is under the word 'shocking'. I suddenly felt self-concious.
"No, no. Don't think it's that. Definitely nothing wrong like that." He said half conforting me but it only made me nervous since he said 'don't think it's that'. Then obviously it's something else. I made a small laugh but then it hit me. When we were in the hallway and he took my hand, it sent shocks all through me and then before when he attacked me without me knowing where he was, his hand shocked my stomach.
I opened my mouth and my eyebrows arched up. He understood and knelt down on one knee in front of me. He placed his hand on my knee which sent it into a spasm. I looked down as I felt a tingling feeling deep in the skin. I looked up to see his cheeks shadowing from his long lashes because of the skylight which filled the whole room. Still looking at my spasming knee, he said, "That shouldn't be happening. You've probably been wondering what the hell that shock was that I gave you when we first touched. Except it didn't only shock you, it shocked me too. It's like you're this live wire to me. I'm supposed to be the only one who can send electric currents through others." Then he looked up at me and his pale brown eyes had me captivated with his next words following. "But never have I ever, recieved a current back."
His hand left my knee and his rose again as I felt the warmth withdraw from my body and the cold freeze down to my bone to make it's home.
"Well, I think that's enough for today." He said as he rubbed his hands together as he tilted his head to his left away from me.
TenI slowly lowered backwards until my back was flat on the ground. I rolled my head to see him but he was gone. I sighed and rolled myself up so I could push myself off the ground. He had my bag from the bathroom in his hand. I reached out and retrieved it from his grasp. I reached down for the water bottle and he was already there. I stood up again and he held it out and my hand grabbed it but touched his. I felt a zap but it sent a wave of warmth through me. It felt uninviting but alittle alone. I didn't realise my hand tightened on the bottle and so did his. I looked at the bottle and then at him. He looked pale and it certainly wasn't the skylight's black and white hue.
I realised he was watching the bottle. I didn't realise it was actually boiling. Bubbles exploding in the plastic bottle. The lid popped and we both let go as water sprayed on us. I jumped back and my gym bag fell off my shoulder. My hands raised to my mouth as I quaked with tears threatening to release. He stood there with his hands by his sides in balled fists. His eyes closed tight and his brows creased. His jawline was set and showed he was biting down.
I lowered my hand from my hands from my mouth as I took a step towards the bottle and went down on one knee and touched the leaking water. It was freezing cold. How could that-?
It was boiling only moments before and now it's freezing. I quickly stood and looked at him. I stepped closer to him and placed my fingers under his chin. "Hey." I said with my forehead creased. He slowly opened his eyes but still creased. His hand came up and slowly gripped mine and placed it down. He forced a smirk onto his face. "You should probably get going." I felt a pang of unexpected dissapointment.
I walked out into the hallway with a towel he lent me and I promised him I'd wash it and return it to him as soon as possible. I had my hoodie on again and threw my shorts into my gym bag and the waterbottle. I ran out into the rain to the boarding house again. I made it up the stairs and Dee walked past me and stood infront of me haulting my walk. I looked up and pulled back my hoodie. I laughed as she smiled with her bright red lip stick showing her usually white glowling teeth that were currently covered in what I most certainly knew was chocolate. She flicked her hair from her face and laughed aswell. "I was actually just looking for you! Party this weekend. It's a big social event held once a semester. So, dress nice. Wait, scratch that, that's way too lame. Dress to impress! Oh and it's taco night for dinner so be there or be square!"
I smiled and told her I would. I pulled my hair from behind my ear and Dee's face looked at my hand and grabbed it.
"You okay?" She said with a concerned look.
"I'm fine, why?" I replied with an almost mirrored concerned look.
"You're bleeding." which made me take my hand back and look at it. I looked at my hand and it had red smudges all over it. I realised it was Duke. He really must have been scared since he basically balled his hands into fists so hard that it drew blood.
"Oh, yeah, just a small cut." I lied and she looked at me with eyebrows low and an unsure look.
"Doesn't look small." She stated.
"No, really. It's small. I just bleed heaps." I said with a slight smile. And she slowly nodded.
"If you say so. Just make sure you clean it up and get it looked at, mkay?" She said as she walked around me and into her room a few doors down from me. I stood there for what seemed for ages and headed towards my room. I sat everything on my desk and got out my bottle and sat it on the table. I turned my lamp beside my bed and sat on my bed facing the computer desk and the bottle. I stared at it intently and then at my hand.
Quietly to myself, I said, "I've had a hell of a first day. This place is so conviently full of secrets."
I looked out my window with rain pelting the glass.
"Starting with Dee, Conner and Duke. Actually... Everyone." I breathed and got back off my bed. Grabbing my jacket and throwing on the hood, I grabbed my laundry bag with dirty clothes in it.
I headed out into the rain.
