DIAMONDS ARE NOT FOREVER

The tiny diamond sailed through the humid air above the sparkling city lights of Honolulu before disappearing forever. Aghast at the sudden violent reaction to her surrender of the ring, she turned back toward the tall Hawaiian man who stood before her, his face hard like the carven tiki statues in Waikiki.
Studying his face, she realized her life path had shifted radically in mere seconds. No longer could she see their future children scampering about their beach front home or luaus with his family. It was over for good this time and even though it hurt, she was relieved.

HOPE

The older girl studied the little man made from the words HOPE, tattooed on the lower back of the foster girl who had come to live with them. The girl with the tattoo looked hopeless, her face sad and eyes distant as she stared across the gently heaving ocean. Was she thinking of her mother? Too stressed with paying bills and holding down two jobs to deal with the black clothes, black makeup, and drugs? Did she have a tiny spark of hope to keep her alive? The older girl thought so. Don’t worry little sister, you are safe here.

FANTASY CHILD

When the child was born, the grandmother said, β€œIt is a fey child; take it back to the woods.” But the mother, young and fair as a spring morning took up the child and kissed it. β€œNay, it is the child of the Elfin prince who visited me ere Summer was gone. β€œ
The mother kept vigil through the years for the return of her faerie lover, saying, β€œHe’ll return and take us to live with him, my son.”
And the child grew, quiet and alone; shunned as the bastard of the soldier who ruined the mother’s virtue and mind.
