“You don’t want answers do you? The whole lot of you never want answers. You just want an excuse to beat up innocents.” The room went quiet. The beeping stopped, the shuffling of paper stopped. Everything.
“We don’t beat up innocents, we only capture the guilty to keep humans safe.” A female doctor said, pushing her glasses up on her nose.
“No, you take in innocents because you’ve no else to pray on. The rogues have stopped being vicious and violent, fey don’t cause you problems, dragons live in their own lives. What else is there for you guys? Nothing. So you make up shit, you take in people like me, who’ve done nothing the hell wrong, and you test and experiment and kill them. Innocents! The people you swore to protect!” She was punched in the mouth before she could say anything else, she swore she could feel her teeth loosen but that was impossible. Seeing as she was fey, didn’t matter if she was half or not, her bones were stronger than gold.
“Shut up your traitor!” Her mother hissed, her blue eyes giving away her insanity.
“You’re insane. All of you are fucking insane!!” She shrieked as she was punched in the eye, knowing good and damn well that it was swollen shut now.
Alissa moved over, her hip bumping into Isaac, as she leaned over to see what he was doing.
“That’s a cool looking house.” She said lightly, working on her Lego sculpture. He looked to her, his brown hair flopping in his hazel eyes.
“It’s supposed to be a dog.” He said, biting back his smile, as he added more pieces.
“Oh… well. It’s just so good that I thought it was a house.”
“That made no sense.”
“Yeah, I know.” She said hunching her shoulders and pouting.
“You tried.” He mumbled, she furrowed her brow and looked to him, still pouting.
“My mom used to say that if you tried, that would be all that mattered if it didn’t go right.” He said hesitantly, not looking up from his ‘dog’. She smiled softly and crossed her legs Indian style, then tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.
“Your mom is very smart then.”
“My mom’s dead, because she tried.” He said sourly, looking at her again, his eyes angry and hard. Something a nine year olds eyes should never be.
“This might sound terrible but, isn’t that all that mattered? That she tried? I’m sure she died trying.” She said, looking dead on into his eyes.
“My dad’s wolf died when my mom died, he hasn’t been the same since. He cries, almost every night, and I swear I’ve heard him pray to the Human God more than once. What, exactly, was she trying to do? Oh wise one.” He spat at her. Her wolf pulled up and she bit back the snarl and growl she wanted to do, but instead she hardened her eyes and stood.
“Nice house.” She said, then walked away with her 3-D heart crumbling in her hands.
She was pulling on a top when her bedroom door in her apartment banged open. Mark stood there, breathing fast with his eyes feral and wild. Her eyes watered and she strode to him, wrapping her arms around his muscular build, and let it out.
“Why Samantha? Why would you just leave like that?” He choked out, her Omega calming down his wolf.
“I-I didn’t do anything. It was all her, s-she just took over.” She sobbed, inhaling his scent and letting it soothe her as much as it could.
“It’s Ok, I’ve got you now. She can’t hurt you.”
“He is. He’s here, Mark. Why is here?” She cried, her body shaking viciously with them.
“Valerie’s been taken by the hunters. We suspect that her mother took her and they’re doing exactly what they did to Alpha Tom.”
“What’d they do to dad?” She asked, moving back and calming down her tears.
“Tested.” With that one word Samantha knew, she’d be working close with her ex-mate.
Chapter 23Valerie sat with her scarred shoulders slumped in her cell. This was the night her and her sister would be free of their mothers’ cold hard grip, hopefully. She had absolute faith in her sister, knew that she was strong enough to handle her own against their mother. But she had faith in her mother more. She knew her mother had a viperous tongue and knew how to use it well. She knew her mother could sweet talk a boa constrictor into letting go of its prey. All of this she knew, she’d just have to sit and wait it out. She closed her eyes and allowed herself to dream, just to let everything go and be… free.
The breeze whipped her hair on her face, making her smile as her curls tickled her nose. Here she was safe, here she could live. She curled her toes into the luscious sand that, if she opened her eyes, shined like the back of a dull penny. She heard the waves that crashed into the shore, moving closer and closer to where she sat with her knees tucked under her chin. This was relaxing. The only thing that could perfect this dream world would be-
“Valerie! Open your eyes, we’ve got to talk!” Wait, that couldn’t be- but it was. He was here!? She opened her dream eyes and peered into his hazel eyes that smiled down at her.
“You. Oh, this is a wonderful dream.”
“Dream?”
“Sadly I’ll have to wake up soon. My sister plans to bust me out.” She sighed, standing in her dream world, her purely green halter dress flying in the oceanic breeze.
“You don’t think any of this is real do you?”
“How could it be? Brandon, you’re dead. I saw you die, I held your body in my arms. Unless I’ve finally gone round the bend and completely lost my wits.” Brandon looked at her, then wrapped his arms around her. She squeaked, not knowing how to react. She’d never felt his touch before, she couldn’t even imagine what it felt like. She couldn’t conjure up a memory that would help her feel this wonderful miracle, she could only stand there. Suddenly memories came flying at her. Him dead, him slowly losing all of his color. They ranged from truly heart breaking to heart aching.
“No, no, no. Shh, I know. Everything that happened, it was my fault. I’d given up when I shouldn’t have. I should’ve fought to be with you. My wolf wanted you with his next breath of air, but I always fought it. And for that, I’m sorry. But I’m gonna make this alright, in fact I’ve done something that will help you. It will help everybody. You’ll be safe, and happy.”
“Brandon, what are you talking about?” His dream apology fell on deaf ears, she didn’t care anymore. All she knew was that she loved him, she’d wait until the Gods’ decided her time was up before she’d ever consider not loving him.
“I gave him to someone else. I gave you a new beginning.”
“Brandon, I don’t understand.” He swiped his thumb on her bottom lip, sorrow filling those hazel pits that had brought her nightmares.
“I know you don’t. I just want you know, everything will get better.”
Her eyes shot open as she sat up and gasped for air, something unreal had just happened to her. She looked around at the abandoned room that surrounded her cell and slumped her shoulders. This was real, the torture was real. That, she had no mistake of. There was no dreaming in or out of this world.
Chapter 24“Now, I want you to be nice to Kenna while I talk to Jake.” She said to her son, stopping down and looking into blue eyes.
“Why do you feel like you have to talk to him. The guy’s a douche, he left you.”
“Hurt me, why don’t you. Look, JJ, this isn’t about me. This is about you.”
“I don’t want him, I’m perfectly fine with just you. I like the way it’s been. Just me and you, no one to hold us back.”
“JJ, you’ve got to give him time. He’s your-“
“He’s no father of mine. As far as me and my wolf are concerned he’s just some filthy, stinky, lying, leaving Alpha who hurt my mother.” She sighed and wrapped her arm around his shoulder, then walked to the Greene house. She knocked three times, letting whoever heard know she was friendly. Cara opened the door and looked up, smiled then looked to JJ and frowned slightly.
“Yeah?”
“Need to speak with Jake.” Sammy didn’t miss the way her little sisters’ lip curled slightly at his name before she stepped back.
“Come on in. Mom and Dad should be in the kitchen eating something. He’s either in the den or his room.” Cara said, crossing her arms while she walked to the couch to sit down and watch more TV.
“Who was it?” Her dad yelled as Sam closed the door and hung her jacket up.
“Eldest!”
“Sammy!” Her mom giggled coming out of the door that led to the kitchen and spreading her arms. Sam walked to her mom and hugged her tightly, inhaling the sweet honey and lavender scent her mother always had.
“What brings you by?” Her dad asked as he stole her from her mother and squeezed her in one of those mammoth hugs he used to give her when she was 13.
“I need to talk to him.” She said looking into her fathers eyes and pleading with him to understand.
“That’s not a good idea, sweet heart.”
“I’ve got too dad, for him I’ve got to try.” She pleaded, squeezing his forearm. He sighed and ruffled his black hair.
The things I do for the woman in this family.” He mumbled and held his hands up, he wasn’t going to stop her.
“He’s upstairs, I’ll call him-“
“No need, I got this.”
“Samantha you can’t-“ She didn’t listen to her mom as she ran up the stairs, her wolf eager to see him. The smell of sex and frustration were high around the threshold of his room and it almost sickened her to touch any part of it. For JJ. She took a deep breath then held it in. She opened the door so it hit the wall with a loud bang. He was on top of her, his eyes glowing amber as his wolf took out all of his frustrations on her willing body. His hair was wild and there was a light sheen of sweat forming on his skin that radiated in the afternoon light.
“Sammy?”
“I need to speak with you. After you’re… finished.” She closed the door and got
