“That’s psycho roommate,” says Seth, steering Millie away from my door. “Ignore her.”
Millie glances over her shoulder. “Why does she look like a wet rat?”
Seth pokes her nose. “Excellent question.”
I roll my eyes and turn toward my door, finding another unwanted guest wearing a football jersey standing in front of it. He wreaks of beer and leers down at me, barely balancing on his two feet and nearly stumbling into me. “Psycho roommate huh?” He says, taking a swig from his red cup. “What sport do you play?”
“Excuse me.”
“She doesn’t play sports Tom,” Lucas calls from his place on the couch, his arm slung around a brunette with breasts nearly bursting from her tight top.
“Then, like,” Tom hiccups, “what are you even doing here?”
I scoff and shove past him. I open my door quickly and before he can open his mouth and say something else, I slam it in his face. I lean against my door, sighing and closing my eyes. Just get ready and leave. Who cares what they think? Not you.
“Man, what a bitch,” I hear Tom behind the door and shake my head, biting back the tears threatening to fall.
I grab a brush and run it through my hair. I apply moisturizer all over my face and body and stare down at the mess of clothes around me, nearly screaming as I recall finding those jerks in my room going through my things. Tomorrow. Tomorrow we are going to talk about privacy and not going into my room.
I choose a simple short black dress to wear with my black ankle boots and a leather jacket to top it off with before blow drying my hair and applying makeup. I decide to go simple with my eye makeup, keeping it to an eye liner and mascara duo accompanied by a bold red lip. I top it off by putting on a black wide brim hat. I gaze back at myself in the mirror, happy with my look and ready to seize the world with my new girlfriends.
I grab my bag and my keys and lock the door behind me. I pull on the doorknob, ensuring it is definitely locked this time. I really do not need any guests wandering in there and deciding to steal a few of my possessions. Especially given what happened earlier today.
When I turn around I see Seth, Lucas, and Hunter staring at me. Their guests are still drinking, not even paying attention to me, but how am I going to slip past the boys if they won’t stop staring at me? I touch my hair, wondering if it’s a knotted mess, but that doesn’t make any sense. I pull out a mirror from my bag, wondering if my lipstick is smeared or on my teeth.
Nope. Totally fine.
I look up, still seeing their gazes on me.
“What?” I say, shrugging on my backpack and inching towards the door.
Lucas shakes his head and looks into his beer. “Nothing,” he mutters.
Seth says and does nothing, even given Millie is currently sucking on his neck. He just continues to stare at me with this dopey wide eyed expression.
I pass by him slowly, imagining him as a lion and me an antelope, walking as slow as possible and hoping he doesn’t notice. Or maybe he’s a T-Rex and I’m Doctor Alan Grant. I reach for the door, feeling deja vu all over again. I pull it open and step towards my freedom.
Almost there. Nearly there.
Hunter slams the door shut with one hand. “Are-aren’t you forgetting something,” he says, his voice sounding unusually high pitched.
I look up to the ceiling. Why? I whine in my head. Why can’t I have just this night?
“What am I forgetting Hunter?” I deadpan, waiting for some stupid excuse as I stare at his stupid large hand resting on my only exit.
He looks around. “Um.” He chuckles while I shake my head at him.
Seth pushes Millie off his lap and pats Hunter on the shoulder, earning a hiss and a grimace. “What Hunter is trying to say,” Seth starts, quickly removing his hand from Hunter’s shoulder, “is you have left the kitchen in a complete mess.” Seth gestures to the kitchen. The sink is currently filled with dishes from this morning as well as glasses and an assortment of beer bottles. The French toast I painstakingly made this morning is being kicked back and forth between Tom and another jersey wearing jock.
I look at Hunter, who is nodding his head vehemently.
“You must be joking,” I say, trying to keep my voice down.
“And don’t forget about our rooms,” Hunter adds. “You need to clean those, too.”
“You can go fuck yourselves for all I care.” I reach for the door, but before I grab the handle, several party goers swarm around me. Tom picks me up and hauls me back into the kitchen. “Stop it!” I shout, smacking his shoulder. “Put me down now!”
Millie and her clique point at me and laugh. “Look at the little rat!” Says one, giggling over her cup.
“Put me down!”
“Alright,” says Tom, dropping me onto the kitchen floor. I feel French toast squish under my butt and groan, picking myself up and wiping my bottom. I really hope that doesn’t stain.
“Alright, Rachel, get going!” Says Seth while shooing at me. “It’s not going to clean itself.”
“Yeah, Rachel.” Millie saunters over me. “Get going.” She pours her drink on the front of my dress. I barely register what is happening. Only that my front is cold and I smell like beer. I stare down at my dress. Silence surrounds me.
“What the hell Mitzie,” I hear Seth. “Why did you do that?”
“I don’t know. I just felt like it.”
“Well, you shouldn’t have. Just-” He groans. “Just leave her alone. God!”
In front of me is a cloth. I look up and see Lucas handing it to me. A sob escapes me and I clamp my eyes close, biting back another.
“Oh, is she going to cry?” I hear a
