by the door, I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the giant mirror. I couldn’t go see Brian wearing pink flannel pajamas and an oversized T-shirt. On an impulse, I stripped down to my red thong, threw on a black leather jacket, and walked out the front door.

I pulled into my best friend’s driveway and stepped out of my car. Walking up to the door, I started to have a moment of doubt, but the heat between my legs propelled my feet forward. I rang the bell and waited a minute for Brian to answer. When he came to the door, I opened my jacket, exposing my naked breasts and red panties.

“Violet,” he groaned. “Come inside.”

He pulled me into the house with one swift motion. I dropped my coat, letting it fall to the floor. Brian moved toward me, but instead of reaching out for me, he picked up my jacket and handed it back to me.

“Do you have any idea what you do to me, Violet? This can’t happen. You’re Breeze’s best friend. I’m married. I can’t.” He closed his eyes as he spoke, as if the temptation of seeing me was too much. “You can’t just show up at my fucking house wearing nothing. What would you have done if my wife answered, huh?”

I reached out and grabbed his bicep. “I’m not stupid, Brian. She’s at work. Breeze is at my house—”

“And you’re here,” he snapped. “You shouldn’t be here. You should keep far, far away from me, Violet.”

I pulled him in for a hug, mostly because the idea of keeping away from him made my stomach drop and my chest coil in pain. I wanted nothing between us, not even air. He waited a moment before wrapping me up in a hug. “I can’t help it. I want you,” I bravely whispered. Maybe Breeze was right. I always went after what I wanted.

“Why? You’re young. You’re fucking beautiful…” Brian pulled away to look me in the eye. “Why want something complicated and wrong when you could have anyone else?”

I leaned up and pressed my lips to his jaw. “Because you care about me. Because I see how hard you work to make the surf shop thrive. Because you ask about my day. Because there is something here, something undeniable.”

“This is sick, Violet. We can’t.”

“I know. But can I pretend that we can for just a little bit? Please? I’ve never felt this way before. I just want to hold you. Hug you.”

Brian grabbed my hand and pulled me to the living room couch. I debated on sitting on the cushion next to him, but Brian pulled me to his lap. I straddled him with nothing but a thong on, and I wanted nothing more than to ride the hard length growing against my clit. His shorts were stretched over his impressive bulge. Brian wanted this just as much as I did. I wrapped my arms around his neck and held him tightly.

“Ally and I got married young,” he whispered as I held him. I didn’t want to talk about his wife, but I was curious about their relationship. I never saw them hug. Never saw them share affectionate looks. They acted more like passing ships in the night than anything else. Both were drowning in work, and Breeze might have thought her parents were living a fairy tale, but I saw the distance between them.

“Do you love her?” I asked. Maybe if he told me how much he was head over heels for her, it would sever this ache within me.

“Yes. But it’s a different kind of love. The kind of thing that grows just from sharing a life with someone. It’s a friendly sort of love. Something I feel obligated to reciprocate. She’s always working to support my dreams.”

“That doesn’t sound very fulfilling,” I admitted. “You deserve passion, Brian. And I’m not just saying that because I’m offering it up on a silver platter. Life is too short to be your spouse’s roommate.”

He chuckled, and I reveled in the rumble of our chests pressed together. “What do you know about love, kid?” he teased while stroking my hair. I pulled back and looked him in the eye, forcing a smile to my lips.

“I don’t know about marriage, but I do know about surface level love. My parents’ hearts lack depth. I know that you either jump into something with your all, or don’t jump at all. I think shallow relationships hurt more than absent ones.”

He stroked my cheek and stared at me. This felt like a defining moment. I wanted nothing more than to kiss him. “You should go home, Violet,” he whispered.

“I should.”

Neither of us moved. I licked my lips, and he eyed the movement with longing. “Five more minutes, then you need to go, okay?” he asked before drawing me close for another hug.

“Okay,” I promised, wishing I could stretch five minutes into eternity.

Brian

Breeze rode the barrel wave with the skill of a professional surfer, cheering as she went. I watched with pride, though there was a certain sunbathing beauty on the shore who kept drawing my attention. I wasn’t expecting Violet to tag along today, but Breeze invited her, and I couldn’t very well tell my daughter no without raising suspicions.

Part of me was mad at Violet for pressing the subject. She was always there. Always wearing little to nothing. Always pressing against me, running her slender fingers along my arm. Hugging me for a little longer than what was appropriate. Whispering naughty things in my ear when no one was looking. She was a temptress. A skilled siren calling me to her with every sway of her hips. It wasn’t her fault. I was the adult; I needed to control my urges. I didn’t care if Violet showed up naked and fell on my dick, I needed to be the person with control in our dynamic and shut this down. I refused to be a predator. I didn’t
