to do it without a ringleader, but theyโd muddle along somehow. Theyโd have to until Alex was better.
The next night, Alex was sat outside his caravan, thinking. The other performers had noticed heโd become progressively depressed, but they understood. He wasnโt the only one whoโd lost someone.
The show was about to begin and Alex listened to the applause from the audience. He was dreading the day when heโd have to get on that stage and introduce the performers. The others had been trying to think of a stage name for him, to try and bring him round the idea of being a ringleader. The truth was that Alex already knew what heโd call himself: Alex the Immortal.
The night was cold and it was just starting to snow. Alex pulled his coat around him tighter, the bandages around his stomach shifting slightly.
The night air was cold in his lungs, the silence hung around him like a cloak.
Alex was thinking about the snow when he heard a small sound behind him. He turned in his chair. Out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw shadows shift slightly. He stood, slowly and hobbled to the side of his caravan and listened.
A snap of a twig.
Alex moved closer.
A small cough. There was someone out there.
โWhoโs there?โ Alex asked to the shadows.
He moved closer. He could hear breathing now. It was high and thin, a girlโs.
โWhoโs there? I know youโre out there.โ Alex said again.
And then she was on him, her arms tight around his throat. Pain shot through his stomach as he twisted from her grip. Alex yelped in pain and caught her wrists tightly.
โWait! W-wait! Itโs me!โ
Alex couldnโt quite believe what he was hearing.
โAlex! I couldnโt be without you! I love you! My world is nothing without you!โ the female voice shuddered through Alex, turning his blood cold.
โAmber.โ He whispered before pulling her close and kissing her. โWait, no. Why?โ
โDonโt tell me youโve been fine without me!โ she whispered into his chest.
โI...I canโt...I love you! Just...just stay. Donโt go again!โ Alex pleaded.
โDonโt worry, Iโll never leave you.โ She promised.
The hugged. The embrace lasted a long moment. And then they kissed.
