I managed a weak, “Hi,” in return. Then I closed my eyes, and caught in the middle of reality and dream, I was back on the farm with Bree.

The sun shone down on us from a clear blue sky and the tall grass tickled my skin as we lay on our backs. Neither of us spoke, but there was no need for words. Her hand was in my hair, running through it in an endless soothing motion, and I’d never felt more at peace.

A lifetime of wandering and searching for something to belong to had led me to her. And for the first time, I felt like I could start to let go of the pain and start to heal. Her selfless love made me feel like I could do anything.

I would be back with her, one day. No matter how long it would take or how much I’d have to suffer until that day. I’d hold her in my arms and smell her strawberry-scented hair again.

And that was the day I’d live for.
